Former Indian cricket player Sunil Gavaskar praised India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, by saying he is a captain liked by the people, just like MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev. Rohit Sharma recently won the T20 World Cup 2024, making him the third Indian captain to win a World Cup.
The 35-year-old has taken his team to three finals in a row over the past year. India didn’t win the World Test Championship or the ODI World Cup final in 2023, but they made up for it by winning the T20 World Cup. After India’s victory, Gavaskar said that Rohit is like the legendary Indian captains Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, and that all three are “captains of the people.”
“Rohit Sharma has joined Kapil Dev and Dhoni as the third captain to lead India to a World Cup victory. Just like Kapil and Dhoni, Rohit is a popular captain, well-liked by his teammates and the entire Indian cricket community. Cricket fans admire his simple approach to leadership and his tactical skills are as sharp as the best in the sport,” wrote Gavaskar in his column for mid-day.
In the future, Gavaskar complimented the teamwork of Rahul Dravid and Rohit, the captain and coach, for encouraging a selfless, team-focused mindset among the players.
“Although the players deservedly received most of the attention, the support staff, led by the exceptional Rahul Dravid, also played a significant part in the win. The combination of Rahul and Rohit was outstanding. They were entirely focused on the team, completely selfless, and ready to do whatever it took for Team India,” he further mentioned.
Rohit played a key part in India’s winning effort by being the tournament’s second-highest run scorer. As the opening batsman, he provided powerful starts for the team, scoring 257 runs in eight innings with an average of 36.71 and a fast strike rate of 156.70, including three half-centuries.
His best performance was against Australia in the Super 8 match, where he hit the Australian bowlers all around the field, scoring an impressive 92 runs off 41 balls, including seven boundaries and eight sixes. The Indian captain also scored 57 runs off 39 balls against England in the important semi-final.
