As India prepares for a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, captain Rohit Sharma took a moment to reflect on the team’s recent triumph at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where they emerged victorious against South Africa in the final. Following a clean sweep of Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series, the Indian squad is set to play the ODIs at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on August 2, August 4, and August 7.
Celebrating a Historic Victory
In a video shared by the BCCI, Rohit expressed his joy over the T20 World Cup victory, stating, “Wow! What a month it was. Mazaa hi aa gaya, flooded with memories, etched in history, aisa moment jo zindagi bhar humaare saath rahega.” He humorously added that it still feels like he could don his pads for the shortest format but acknowledged, “I had my time, I enjoyed it, it’s time to move on.”
Rohit emphasized the importance of moving forward with a fresh perspective, saying, “Time aa gaya hai for us to get back on the field, ek naye daur ke saath, ek nayi shuruyaat, ek naye coach ke saath.” He underscored the need for the team to hit the reset button and bring the same energy and passion back onto the field.
Key Players Returning for ODIs
The upcoming ODI series marks the return of senior players like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer, who were instrumental in India’s T20 World Cup success. Rohit and Kohli are back in Indian colors after leading the team to a memorable seven-run victory over South Africa in the final held in Barbados on June 29.
Rohit had an impressive T20 World Cup, finishing with 257 runs in eight matches at an average of 36.71 and a strike rate exceeding 156. His best performance was a near-century score of 92, and he was the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament, contributing significantly to India’s success.
Milestones Within Reach
As Rohit Sharma gears up for the ODI series, he is just 291 runs away from becoming the fourth Indian to achieve 11,000 ODI runs. He is also 60 runs shy of surpassing former captain Rahul Dravid to become the fourth-highest run-getter for India in ODIs. Currently, Rohit has amassed 10,709 runs in 262 matches, boasting an impressive average of 49.12, along with 31 centuries and 55 fifties, with a personal best score of 264.
In contrast, Virat Kohli leads the ODI charts for India with 14,797 runs in 292 matches, maintaining an average of 58.7 and holding the record for the most centuries in the format, totalling 50.
