Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma is set to miss the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The game is scheduled for November 22 in Perth. This decision comes after he and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, welcomed their second child. The couple were blessed with a baby boy on November 15.Â
The couple is already parents to a daughter named Samaira. They announced the joyful news through a heartfelt post themed around the popular sitcom “Friends,”. They captioned it: “Family – the one where we are FOUR”.
Rohit Sharma to Miss First Test Against AustraliaÂ
According to a report in the Times of India, Rohit opted to stay back in Mumbai to support Ritika during this significant time. He communicated his decision to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on November 16. A source close to the development stated, “He wants to spend some more time with his family and the newborn”.Â
The BCCI has fully respected his choice, emphasizing the importance of family during such milestones. Despite not travelling with the team, Rohit remained committed to maintaining his fitness. He trained at local facilities in Mumbai while his teammates prepared for the series in Australia. However, with his absence confirmed for the first match, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah will lead the Indian side in Perth.
Who Will Lead Team India in Rohit’s Absence?Â
Rohit’s absence poses challenges for Team India as they prepare for one of their toughest series yet. The team has struggled to find a reliable opening partner for Yashasvi Jaiswal. KL Rahul was initially slated to open. However, he faced an injury scare during practice when he was struck on the elbow by a rising delivery. Fortunately, reports suggest that his injury is minor, and he is expected to be fit for the match.
In Rohit’s absence, Jasprit Bumrah will captain the team. There are concerns about the opening combination as well. Abhimanyu Easwaran may step in if Rahul is unable to play. The Indian management remains hopeful that Rohit’s experience can be called upon later in the series if family commitments allow.
