Romeo Doubs Signing By New England Patriots Named A Top-10 Move Of NFL Free Agency

Even before the season ended, many expected 2025 to be the final season that Romeo Doubs spent with the Green Bay Packers. While he was one of their most productive wide receivers over the last few seasons, he also did not establish himself as a true number one wide receiver. Additionally, Green Bay has young pass catchers like Matthew Golden and Savion Williams that need the targets that would have otherwise gone to Doubs.

These reasons do not even include the fact that the Packers could not afford to keep Doubs. Last week, he signed a four-year contract with the New England Patriots worth $68 million. He can make up to $80 million in four seasons if he hits all of his incentives.

Despite the fact that Doubs was not the biggest name on the NFL free agent market, his signing by New England has been deemed one of the ten best of the off-season thus far by NFL.com:

“The Patriots had to do something at wide receiver once they decided to release Stefon Diggs. Doubs was one of the most sensible options available to them. He’s not a true No. 1 receiver, but New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels doesn’t run an offense that relies heavily on a player with that skill set.

“The Patriots like receivers with versatility, and that is what Doubs brings to the table. He can create problems for defenders on short, intermediate and deep routes, and he’s used to being a part of an ensemble after spending four seasons in Green Bay.

“And aside from a one-game team suspension in 2024, Doubs has not made headlines at nearlythe same rateas Diggs has throughout his career. While the possibility of a trade for Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown — who played for Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel in Tennessee — continues to loom, signing Doubs is the kind of lower-profile acquisition that could pay huge dividends real fast.”

That team suspension in 2024 was the first indication to many fans that Doubs would not be back in Green Bay when his rookie contract was up. Aside from that incident, though, he was a great teammate and, despite some criticisms, was one of the Packers’ most important pass catchers.

Last year, he had 55 receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns. He led the team in receptions and receiving yards while tying for the club lead in touchdown catches.
