Atlanta Hawks assistant Ronald Nored is leaving the NBA to become the new head coach at Butler University, a move first reported by CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander and later confirmed by the school.
In a statement, Nored shared his excitement about returning to Butler, where he previously played.
“The term ‘dream job’ doesn’t do justice to how I feel about the opportunity to lead the Butler program,” Nored said in a statement.
“Butler is an incredibly special place. As a player, I poured blood, sweat and tears into this program. No one appreciates both the responsibility and the potential that comes with this position more than me.
“Passionate fans, Hinkle Fieldhouse, the BIG EAST, storied tradition, a world-class education, a thriving city … there is incredible momentum at Butler right now and I can’t wait to hit the ground running as we elevate Butler to new heights.”
Nored has spent the past three seasons with the Hawks under Quin Snyder and previously worked with the Pacers, Hornets, and Celtics. He also has head coaching experience in the G League with the Long Island Nets.
A former Butler point guard, Nored helped lead the program to two national title game appearances and now replaces Thad Matta, who recently retired.
He is expected to be introduced as head coach on Friday.
