Rookies Shine On Opening Day – March 27, 2026
Carson Benge, OF, Mets
Carson Benge impressed in his MLB debut, going 1 for 3 with a solo home run, two runs scored, two walks, and a stolen base. This performance perfectly describes who he is as a player and why it’s worth getting excited about him for fantasy. Not only did he offer a blend of power and speed in the minors last season with 15 homers and 22 stolen bases, but he also exhibited excellent plate discipline. He posted a 17.7% strikeout rate and 13.1% walk rate. This type of all-around skillset is very similar to that of Brandon Nimmo, who Benge is replacing for the Mets in the outfield. He should be considered a must-add in any five-outfielder leagues, but he also has a path to fantasy relevance in three-outfielder leagues, too.
Kevin McGonigle, 3B/SS, Tigers
Kevin McGonigle also enjoyed a breakout start to his career, going 4 for 5 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI. He hit sixth in the lineup, but that could change quickly with performances like this. The multi-hit game is something he did plenty of times last season in the minors, slashing .305/.408/.583. Known as one of the best pure hitters in the minors, the only question is how much power and speed he’ll unlock at the major league level. He hit 19 homers and stole 10 bases in 88 games in 2025, which isn’t anything crazy, but his 11.6% strikeout rate and 14.9% walk rate are about as good as you’ll find at any level. If he’s available on the free agent list in your league, go get him before someone else does.
Munetaka Murakami, 1B, White Sox
Munetaka Murakami hit a solo home run and walked twice in his stateside debut on Thursday. While the power is something we expected from the slugger, who once hit 56 home runs in an NPB season, the notable thing is that he didn’t strike out a single time. He struck out at a 28.6% clip in Japan last season, and many worried that the number could soar close to 40% in the majors, especially considering he’s been historically unsuccessful against fast velocity. There was no better test in his debut than facing Jacob Misiorowski, who regularly tops 100 mph. The homer wasn’t off of him, but it’s still encouraging to see that he wasn’t swinging completely wildly up there. If Murakami can hold his strikeout rate below 30%, he’s going to fare a lot better in the majors than many predicted.
Mike Trout, OF, Angels
Mike Trout gave a vintage Mike Trout performance on Thursday by hitting a home run, stealing a base, and walking three times. It’s something that is just refreshing to see if you’re a baseball fan, as it’s been so long since the superstar has looked like himself. He said his knees were feeling better than ever this offseason, and it looks like he set out to prove that by immediately swiping a base, despite only having 14 steals combined in his past six seasons. It’s not just hearsay, either, as he was clocked with a 30 ft/sec sprint speed this spring, which would be one of the best in the majors. If stealing bases is once again part of his game, we could be in for an extreme fantasy resurgence, as he still posted a 98th percentile 15.6% walk rate and 93rd percentile 15.8% barrel rate in 2025.
Cristopher Sanchez, SP, Phillies
Cristopher Sanchez showed why he is one of the best pitchers in baseball on Thursday, throwing six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts. He allowed three hits and no walks, inducing 13 whiffs and posting a 27% CSW%. It doesn’t get much better than that for a first appearance of the year, and with Skenes experiencing a tough outing, Sanchez is well on his way to fight for the NL Cy Young award. In 2025, not only did he post a 96th percentile groundball rate of 58.5%, but he also put up a 26.3% strikeout rate, which ranked in the 77th percentile. That leads to so few fly balls being hit against the lefty that it’s hard to do any damage, so it’s safe to feel comfortable with him as a top-5 fantasy pitcher once again.
