Rory McIlroy Sparks Sandbelt Debate: ‘Kingston Heath Beats Royal Melbourne’

Rory McIlroy has ignited debate ahead of the Australian Open, declaring Kingston Heath his pick over Royal Melbourne — a comment that’s ruffled Sandbelt feathers.

Rory McIlroy has stirred controversy ahead of the Australian Open by declaring Kingston Heath his pick as Melbourne’s best golf course — ahead of the iconic Royal Melbourne.

“I don’t want the membership to take this badly, but it’s probably not the best course in Melbourne,” McIlroy told reporters on Wednesday. Pressed on which course he rated highest, he replied without hesitation: “Kingston Heath.”

The Northern Irishman did soften the blow, adding: “That’s my opinion, but it’s certainly in the top 10 in the world.”

He also admitted Royal Melbourne’s quirks caught him off guard.

“I didn’t anticipate how many blind tee shots there were going to be… it takes a little bit to figure out and is certainly not straightforward.”

Royal Melbourne’s West Course traditionally tops global rankings as Australia’s No.1, with Kingston Heath usually inside the top five. This week’s event uses Royal Melbourne’s composite layout — a mix of East and West holes — which isn’t ranked as highly as the standalone West.

McIlroy’s comments have added spice to the tournament, and it remains to be seen how the world No.2 and reigning Masters champion will fare.

After flying in earlier this week, he’s been pulled in all directions — attending dinners, lunches, and visiting three other Sandbelt clubs on Tuesday, playing a par-3 hole at each. Not exactly ideal prep for a course that can eat you alive if you’re not careful, even if it’s not his favourite in Australia.
