‘Rules will keep getting changed’ – Former India player feels special arrangements are made for MS Dhoni

Dhoni has been the face of the league.

There has been ample buzz around MS Dhoni and his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Initially, he was supposed to have played his final IPL game when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their final league game in 2024.

However, a new update on his future with the tournament has developed, and Dhoni might return for the 2025 edition again. He might play as an uncapped player in the upcoming season, for the BCCI has decided to reinstate the uncapped player rule that was scrapped a few years back.

According to this regulation, a player who has not featured in the playing XI or doesn’t have a central contract for five or more years can be treated as an uncapped player. The salary cap of uncapped players is INR 4 crores.

The rule seems to have been brought back specifically for MS Dhoni, for it will allow CSK to use Dhoni’s services without wasting a retention slot. It is a win-win situation for CSK, for they don’t have anyone apart from Sameer Rizvi to use the uncapped slot on, and each team can retain two uncapped players before the auction or use RTM during the auction.

Mohammad Kaif feels rules will keep changing till MS Dhoni wants to play

On Star Sports, Mohammad Kaif has said Dhoni is fit and playing aggressively, and we will see him playing in the upcoming season. He feels rules will change as long as MS wants to continue.

“We will get to see MS Dhoni playing again. He is fit, he is batting aggressively and is good behind the gloves too. As long as he wants to play, the rules will keep getting changed. You got to change the rules or do whatever you want, to let MS Dhoni play if he wants to play, he is that big of a player and match-winner for CSK.”

Dhoni has been the face of the league. He has played every edition of the league and played a significant role in making CSK the joint-most successful team.

He has won five titles as a leader for the Yellow Army and is the joint-most successful captain in the league. His inclusion will massively surge the TRP of the league.
