The Buffalo Sabres made a significant move to improve their blue line ahead of Friday’s final day in the 2026 NHL trade deadline. The Sabres were active in trade discussions, many of which fell apart (Robert Thomas and Colton Parayko). But, they didn’t give up and instead acquired defensemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets in a multi-asset deal announced early Friday morning.
Per official team announcements, the Sabres received Stanley (27, left-shot, 6’7″, $1.25M AAV, pending UFA) and Schenn (36, right-shot, $2.75M AAV this season, pending UFA; Jets retained 50% of his salary).
The Jets receive: F Isak Rosen (22-year-old forward prospect), D Jacob Bryson (28, pending UFA), a 2027 second-round pick, and a conditional 2026 fourth-round pick (the better of Buffalo’s own or Edmonton’s 2026 4th).
After missing out on Parayko, this trade addresses Buffalo’s need for physical, veteran depth on defense—especially on the right side. Stanley brings massive size, shutdown ability, and an unexpected offensive surge this season (career-high 9 goals, 21 points in ~59 games), while Schenn adds playoff-proven grit, leadership, and penalty-kill reliability (1,118+ career games, Stanley Cup experience).
For the Jets, who are out of playoff contention, this is a clear sell-off of expiring contracts to gain youth and assets: Rosen is a skilled, high-upside forward who’s been passed in Buffalo’s depth chart, Bryson provides bottom-pair NHL experience on a cheap deal, and the picks help rebuild.
The deal came together quickly after reports of advanced talks and both players being scratched from Winnipeg’s lineup vs. Tampa Bay for “roster management.”
