BOSTON (USA, Jan 31): 16-year-old New Zealand’s prodigy Sam Ruthe stunningly destroyed the rest of the men’s one mile field at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, winning in a world lead (later improved at Millrose Games) World U18 overall best (also third in U20 all-time) and senior national overall record of 3:48.88. Belgium’s Pieter Sisk finished second in an overall NR of 3:50.31 NR ahead of Davis Bove (3:51.08 PB) and Foster Malleck of Canada (3:51.39 short-track NR/PB). Ireland’s Darragh McElhinney won the 3000m in 7:38.96 from Romain Mornet of France (7:39.25), short-track bests for both, Vincent Ciattei (7:39.50 PB) and another Frenchman Flavien Szot (7:39.98 PB), also to note Carson Williams 7:39.21 PB winning the open race. Anthony Camerieri improved to 13:12.02 to win the 5000m over Scott Beattie of Great Britain (13:13.19) with Lithuania’s Simas Bertašius winning the open race in 13:27.00 short-track NR. African U20 champion Brian Kweyei of Kenya topped the 800m in 1:46.02 short-track PB ahead of Egypt’s Hazem Miawad (1:46.62 short-track NR).
