The San Jose Sharks recalled help from the Barracuda as their rookies continue to develop on the NHL roster. With three games remaining in their road trip, two against playoff teams, the Sharks have turned to defensive reinforcements.
Barracuda (AHL) Recalls
On Mar. 8 Team Teal recalled defensemen Nolan Allan and Nick Leddy from the San Jose Barracuda (AHL). Allan has eight points (seven assists, one goal) in 43 GP and a minus-13 rating.
Defenseman Sam Dickinson committed seven of the team’s 23 giveaways in their 3-2 OT loss to the St. Louis Blues. In 52 GP, the rookie has 10 points (nine assists, one goal) and a minus-4 rating.
While Dickinson continues to find his footing, the 19-year-old is likely far from his ceiling. Being continually paired with 29-year-old Vincent Desharnais could help him grow more confident and assertive on the blueline.
Thursday’s game against the Bruins had all of the defensive pairings consistent with the previous matchup. The consistency in defensive lines could signal Coach Ryan Warsofsky’s confidence in the developmental units.
Warsofsky told the media post-game Tuesday, “Sometimes you get really good experiences through failure. We learned that lesson a little bit last night with a really good Buffalo team.”
On Thursday, the Sharks also recalled forward Igor Chernyshov from the Barracuda. In the team’s recent 6-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, forwards Pavol Regenda and Ryan Reaves were healthy scratches.
Against the Bruins on Thursday, Kurashev and Regenda were scratched, while Adam Gaudette moved up to the third line. Reaves moved into the fourth line alongside Barclay Goodrow and Zach Ostapchuk for the Boston matchup.
Goalie Shuffle
During the team’s Thursday morning skate, goaltender Yaroslav Askarov sustained a lower-body injury.
Alex Nedeljkovic started against the Bruins, while Kyle Chauvette signed on to an amateur tryout contract (ATO). 24-year-old Chauvette, senior goaltender for the University of New Hampshire, served as Nedeljkovic’s emergency backup.
Slightly older defenders have provided some steadiness on the back end while rookies grow into bigger roles. Up front and in net, lineup and emergency goalie changes show how the Team Teal is adjusting to find results.
San Jose will face the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, and Edmonton Oilers in the final three games of their road trip. Montreal and Edmonton are both in playoff spots.
