Former Sri Lanka captain and ex-chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya announced on Monday that he will take over as head coach after Chris Silverwood resigned. Silverwood’s decision came in the wake of Sri Lanka’s early exit from the T20 World Cup. Jayasuriya, 55, revealed that Sri Lanka Cricket had requested him to step into the coaching role. Sanath will lead the national team in the upcoming white-ball series against India this month and during their tour of England in August. Jayasuriya’s appointment marks a significant change as he brings his extensive experience and leadership skills to the team, aiming to guide them to better performances and restore confidence after recent setbacks.
Sanath Jayasuriya admits to be approached by SLC
Former selector for the Sri Lanka cricket team Sanath Jayasuriya has admitted that Sri Lanka Cricket reached out to him for the head coach position. Jayasuriya admitted that he would be glad to take up the role.
“I have been asked to take over coaching and I am happy to do it,” Jayasuriya told AFP.
Sanath Jayasuriya is set to take over as head coach of the Sri Lankan team after the T20 Lanka Premier League concludes on July 21. Jayasuriya, who played his last international match in 2011, has an impressive cricketing record, having represented Sri Lanka 586 times across all formats, scoring 42 centuries and taking 440 wickets.
Chris Silverwood, the former England coach, resigned for “personal reasons,” according to Sri Lanka Cricket. The board expressed its gratitude to Silverwood for his “valuable contributions during his tenure.” Jayasuriya’s appointment is expected to bring new energy and leadership to the team as they prepare for upcoming series against India and England.
Will Gautam Gambhir be India’s head coach
Indian head coach Rahul Dravid ended his tenure with the end of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The team won their first ICC trophy in 11 years under Rahul’s mentorship. However, the new head coach for India is still being selected.BCCI is yet to announce the head coach for team India.
The Indian cricket team is currently on a tour to Zimbabwe for a T20 series. VVS Laxman is the coach for the fairly young team in India. However, in the Sri Lanka series, team India’s new head coach will join the squad and travel with the team for the 3 ODIs and 3 T20 matches. VVS Laxman will also be travelling with the next head coach.
There has been a lot of speculation that Gautam Gambhir is likely to be India’s next head coach. Gambhir was the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders, the team that won IPL 2024. Additionally, KKR had also won their last 2 trophies only when Gambhir was the team’s captain.
With his excellent skills in the game and extraordinary experience, Gambhir is undoubtedly one of the best options to be team India’s next head coach.
