It is not yet a fait accompli for Sanju Samson in the white-ball teams of Team India, but the cricketer is still dreaming of making his Test debut for the country. The wicket-keeper batter, who scored his maiden T20I century in a game against Bangladesh, has gone public with her ambitions of playing red-ball cricket for the country. In fact, Samson has already spoken to the coaching staff of Team India in the person of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma regarding the Test ambitions. The encouraging thing about this is that apparently both Rohit and Gambhir also consider Samson to be a player suited for Test cricket.
In an Interview with Sportstar, Samson remarked that he is so sure of himself when it comes to red-ball cricket that he knows it is only a matter of time before the BCCI selection committee considers him for that format.
“I have the confidence that I can cut it in red ball cricket and I am not looking to be just a one format player and more so in fifty over cricket. I want to play Test cricket for this country. Prior to the Duleep Trophy the leadership group had stated that they were looking at me for red ball cricket and asked me to take it seriously and play more of the Ranji Trophy,” Samson disclosed.
The Indian batter had an impressive outing for the side during the T20I series against Bangladesh, scoring a century in the last match. Samson appreciated the captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir for the liberty that they provided to him.
“Surya can articulate very well what he needs from the players. He is a convincing figure, and players believe in him. Gautam bhai has been my constant support. It is fun playing cricket when there is someone like a coach who has faith in your competence,” said Samson
“Usually, while playing for India, you are never certain of the job that needs to be done. But this time, about three weeks in advance, it was communicated to me that I would be opening the batting against Bangladesh in the series. I was psychologically ready to take up the new role,” he continued.
