When everyone else was making aggressive moves, Tyler Reddick remained patient as long as possible.
It paid off as Reddick made a final lap charge around Chase Elliott to win Sunday’s 68th running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona Int’l Speedway.
The driver of the No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota became the 25th leader of the Great American Race by leading only the final quarter-mile of the 200-lap race at the famed 2.5-mile superspeedway.
Reddick, who was winless last season, started 26th and rode in the middle of the pack through most of the race, but put himself in position to pounce at the end.
On the final lap, leader Carson Hocevar spun, allowing Elliott to power into the lead and pull away. But he was too far ahead and Reddick with Riley Herbst pushing stormed to the lead.
As Reddick eased under the checkered flag, Herbst triggered a crash that also involved Elliott, Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski.
Reddick’s biggest victory was the ninth of his career.
