Sebastian Fundora vs Keith Thurman – Big-Fight Preview & Predictions

The WBC world title is on the line this Saturday as Sebastian Fundora looks to defend his crown against former world champion Keith Thurman in Las Vegas.

Thurman fights for a WBC title for the second time in his career, this time against super welterweight champion Fundora at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

‘The Towering Inferno’ is the far more active fighter of the two, having boxed 51 rounds in the time his opponent has boxed just three.

Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) became full WBC champion following his split decision victory over Tim Tszyu back in March 2024.

He went on to rematch the Australian and did even better this time around, forcing him to retire in the seventh round after dropping him in the first.

His other defence of the title came in equally impressive style when he stopped Chordale Booker in just four rounds.

The 6’6” behemoth has just one loss on his 25-fight résumé, and that came at the hands of Brian Mendoza, who put him down in the seventh before Fundora was counted out.

Similarly, his opponent Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs) also has just one loss on his record, which came against eight-weight world champion Manny Pacquiao in 2019.

Despite being beaten via a points decision, ‘One Time’ proved he could hang at the very top — though that was six years ago.

The 33-fight veteran has fought just twice in the last 48 months, first against former WBC welterweight world champion Mario Barrios, where he won a wide points decision.

Most recently, he faced Brock Jarvis just over a year ago, putting himself back in the knockout column with a third-round stoppage.

Prediction: After such a long spell of inactivity, Thurman will likely struggle against the towering Fundora, who should score a convincing points victory.

Yoenis Tellez vs Brian Mendoza

In the co-main event, two fighters who come to close the show early clash in Yoenis Tellez and Brian Mendoza.

Tellez (11-1, 8 KOs) has a 72% knockout ratio in just 12 fights, compared to Mendoza’s 74% across 27 bouts.

Both men come off statement stoppage victories, with Mendoza (23-4, 17 KOs) stopping Jesus Rojas in the fourth round.

In his last contest, Tellez forced Kendo Castaneda to retire before the start of the sixth round.

Prediction: Similarly to the main event, the more active fighter in Tellez should have enough to win via a late stoppage.

Remaining Undercard

The unbeaten Yoenli Hernandez (9-0, 8 KOs) returns to action and looks to take his record into double digits on Saturday.

He takes on the toughest test of his career on paper in Terrell Gausha (24-5-1, 12 KOs), who boasts far more professional experience.

Prediction: Hernandez should extend his unbeaten record and will likely stop his opponent late on.

20-year-old prospect Kaipo Gallegos (11-0-1, 9 KOs) returns to the ring after a quick turnaround from his last fight.

The southpaw fought at the end of January and picked up the ninth stoppage of his career against the previously unbeaten Wilson Akinocho.

Prediction: He should get the stoppage against Julian Gonzalez (16-1-1, 12 KOs) from round six onwards.

Elijah Garcia (17-1, 13 KOs) faces a tough test in Kevin Newman II.

Newman (18-3-1, 11 KOs) is on an impressive run of wins, compared to Garcia, who has fought just once since losing a split decision to Kyrone Davis in 2024.

Prediction: Newman II could cause an upset on Saturday night.

Italy’s Cristian Cangelosi (12-0, 5 KOs) returns to action and should extend his unbeaten run against Miguel Angel Hernandez (9-1, 7 KOs).

19-year-old prospect Aldo Blancas makes his debut on the card and will hope to start his professional journey with a bang — he should stop Jamal Johnson (2-1, 1 KO).

Gurgen Hovhannisyan (9-0, 8 KOs), Brayan Gonzalez (4-0, 3 KOs) and Robert Guerrero Jr (7-0, 3 KOs) also return on the card and should all win in style, remaining unbeaten.
