Sebastian Fundora vs Keith Thurman – Results & Post-Fight Report

Sebastian Fundora retained his WBC super welterweight world title with a punishing sixth round stoppage of Keith Thurman in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Fundora (24-1-1, 16 KOs) overwhelmed former welterweight titlist, Thurman (31-2, 23 KOs) into submission after six one-sided rounds at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

‘The Towering Inferno’, who had a nine-inch height advantage over Thurman, set the pattern of the bout within the first 10 seconds, with a crunching left finding the challenger’s chin.

‘One Time’ boxed with caution on the outside, but by round two the 37-year-old was already in trouble, with a left hand buckling his knees.

Thurman, coming off a third round knockout of Brock Jarvis last March, did have some success in the third, but he was getting caught with combinations as Fundora marched forward.

Fundora was forcing Thurman to trade with him and landed at least two significant uppercuts in the fourth, as he pressed for an early knockout.

Thurman, only beaten once in his career in 2019 by Manny Pacquiao on points, was staring a first stoppage defeat in the face, as he was met by a fierce onslaught in the fifth round.

Thurman had vowed to produce a similar display to Brian Mendoza when he knocked out Fundora in 2023 and the Florida man went for broke in search of a knockout.

Thurman was checked by the ringside doctor just before the start of the sixth round, with his left eye streaming with blood and despite being allowed to continue, he was caught with a barrage of blows which prompted referee Thomas Taylor to stop the bout.

The 28-year-old made a third successful defence of his crown with the biggest scalp of his 26-fight professional career.

“It was a lot easier than I expected,” he said post-fight.

“I was a little nervous today.

“He’s such a big name. Such a big fighter.

“But we got in there and I reminded myself, as soon as we stepped in the ring, it’s my world, you’re in my world.”

Fundora, who halted Tim Tszyu in the seventh round of their rematch in July, could target the winner of the likely showdown between unified WBO and WBA titlist, Xander Zayas and Jaron Ennis, which is expected to be officially announced imminently.

Tellez survives Mendoza test

In a bloody battle, Yoenis Tellez overcame Brian Mendoza by unanimous decision in a thrilling super welterweight affair.

Tellez (12-1, 8 KOs) faced serious adversity in the third round, after an accidental head clash left him writhing in pain and with blood streaming out of his nose.

This appeared to spur the Cuban to engage in a fire-fight and Mendoza (23-5, 17 KOs) gave as good as he got.

Mendoza was then cut himself by his left eye following an accidental head clash in the eighth round.

The judges rewarded the accuracy of Tellez with two scores of 98-92 and a third at 97-93.

Hernandez stops Gausha

Yoenli Hernandez closed in on a maiden middleweight world title shot, stopping Terrell Gausha (24-6-1, 12 KOs) in the fourth round.

Hernandez (10-0, 9 KOs) was in full control and a hard right hand prompted the referee to intervene, although the stoppage seemed far too early.

The Cuban is the number one contender WBA middleweight champion, Erislandy Lara’s belt.

Hovhannisyan halts Navarro

Gurgen Hovhannisyan (10-0, 9 KOs) continued his unbeaten streak with a fifth round stoppage of Cesar Navarro (15-4, 13 KOs).

The Armenian heavyweight is ranked at eight in the WBA in the pursuit of unified champion, Oleksandr Usyk.

Remaining Undercard

In a crossroads clash at light heavyweight, Kevin Newman II (19-3-1, 11 KOs) edged past Elijah Garcia (17-2, 13 KOs) by majority decision.

Super welterweight Cristian Cangelosi (12-0-1, 5 KOs) remained unbeaten, but was held to a split decision draw with Miguel Angel Hernandez (9-1-1, 7 KOs).

Lightweight Kaipo Gallegos (12-0-1, 9 KOs) survived a third round knockdown to outpoint Julian Gonzalez (16-2-1, 12 KOs).

Robert Guerrero Jr (8-0, 3 KOs) floored Rigoberto Rivera (3-3, 1 KO) on route to his eighth professional victory by unanimous decision.

20-year-old featherweight prospect, Brayan Gonzalez (5-0, 4 KOs) remained undefeated with a fifth round stoppage of Brandon Medina (7-5).
