Sebastian Fundora’s next fight: Three names after Thurman win

Sebastian Fundora’s statement stoppage of Keith Thurman has thrown the super welterweight division wide open, with the newly established champion now targeting unification bouts against the biggest names at 154lbs.

Fundora became the first man to stop Thurman last night and just the second fighter to ever beat the 37-year-old, alongside Manny Pacquiao.

‘The Towering Inferno’ has just one loss on his résumé, which came against Brian Mendoza.

Since being stopped in 2023, the 28-year-old has been on a near-flawless run.

He became WBC world champion in 2023 and has now defended his 154lbs crown four times.

With wins over names like Tim Tszyu and Keith Thurman, Fundora will look to unify his belts next, and here are three names that could help him do just that.

Jaron Ennis

Possibly the greatest commercial draw for Fundora, a fight with ‘Boots’ would be a huge event.

Ennis, a former ruler at welterweight, is unbeaten in 35 and continues to impress.

‘Boots’ has held both the IBF and WBA world titles at welterweight and will want to get back to world honours as soon as possible.

He moved up to Fundora’s super welterweight division last time out and made no mistake against Uisma Lima.

Ennis stopped the Angolan in the first round of his debut in the higher division.

Ennis has publicly called for a number of fights, including Vergil Ortiz Jr and Xander Zayas, so a clash with Fundora could make perfect sense.

Xander Zayas

Boxing’s youngest male world champion is now looking for his next fight, and ‘The Towering Inferno’ could fit that role perfectly.

Zayas is a unified champion at 154lbs, currently holding the WBA and WBO titles.

He first picked up the WBO belt towards the back end of 2025 against Jorge Garcia Perez, winning a wide unanimous decision.

He wasted no time in picking up a second world title, dethroning then-WBA world champion Abass Baraou in January of this year.

A fight for three belts would be huge, but both Ennis and Zayas look set to face each other instead, with rumours circulating.

Vergil Ortiz Jr

Ortiz Jr currently holds the WBC interim title at super welterweight, so a fight between Fundora and the 28-year-old could be the most likely to materialise.

Ortiz is unbeaten in 24 and boasts an impressive 92% knockout ratio.

Last time out, he stopped Erickson Lubin in just two rounds.

He also went the distance against former Terence Crawford opponent Israil Madrimov on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol II.

Ortiz Jr was also in discussions to fight Ennis, but negotiations appear to have stalled, so he may look to challenge for the full WBC title next.
