Serena Williams once argued how many Grand Slams she’d have won if not for Venus

Serena and Venus Williams remain one of sports’ most unique and arresting success stories.

After all, whilst two siblings making it at the elite level of any field is impressive, to have been as dominant as this duo was takes something truly special.

The Williams family produced two generational legends of tennis, who won numerous honours during the same golden period.

However, it is worth wondering just how much more successful each might have been had it not been for the other.

This was a concept that Serena Williams actually touched upon back in 2024.

Serena Williams’ Grand Slam prediction if not for Venus Williams

Speaking about how they would deal with facing each other on the biggest stages, both vying to win the game’s greatest honours, the 23-time major champion actually revealed their ‘rule’.

If they were to face one another in a Grand Slam, whoever won then had to go on and win the title.

However, in relaying their age-old plan, she also predicted how many Grand Slam titles they both would have won if not for the other.

Serena claimed: “We had this rule that if we played against each other before the final, we had to win the title. I think Venus would have had a minimum of 15 Grand Slams if we didn’t play. I would have had 30.”

What happened every time Serena and Venus played each other at a Grand Slam?

Between 1998 and 2020, Serena and Venus Williams met 31 times on the professional circuit.

And, given their respective legendary talents, many came on the biggest stages.

Are there any other players you would like to see come out of retirement? If so, who?

16 of their clashes came at major events, nine of which were actually meetings in the finals. Naturally, the far more successful of the two enjoyed more wins.

Their first major meeting came at the 1998 Australian Open, where Venus triumphed over her little sister. However, that would be the first of just five wins claimed over Serena at a Grand Slam.

In finals overall, Serena led that too, 9-3. However, in major finals, it stood at 7-2.

Whilst Venus remains present on tour, Serena Williams’ potential comeback to tennis has naturally inspired great excitement about the prospect of these two sisters reuniting.
