Shahid Afridi Questions Babar Azam’s Leadership After Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Exit

Shahid Afridi, the former explosive all-rounder for Pakistan, took centre stage after the T20 World Cup final, offering contrasting views on the leadership styles of Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam. While applauding Sharma’s captaincy for guiding India to their second T20 World Cup title, Afridi also raised questions about Azam’s leadership following Pakistan’s disappointing group-stage exit.

Afridi Highlights the Importance of Strong Leadership

Afridi emphasized the crucial role a leader plays in shaping a team’s performance. “The leader’s body language becomes the team’s body language,” he explained to PTI. “The leader has to set an example.”

Pointing to Rohit Sharma as a prime example, Afridi elaborated, “Look at his game and his style of playing; the lower-order batsmen who come in are all confident because the captain likes to play aggressive and attacking cricket.” Afridi’s remarks suggest he views Sharma’s leadership as a key factor in India’s success, with his positive attitude and aggressive approach influencing the entire team.

Contrasting Leadership Styles: Rohit Sharma vs Babar Azam

Afridi’s praise for Sharma implicitly contrasted with Pakistan’s showing under Babar Azam’s captaincy. Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment, with defeats to co-hosts USA and arch-rivals India leading to an early exit. While they managed to salvage some pride with victories over Ireland and Canada, Pakistan’s overall performance fell far short of expectations. Afridi’s comments appeared to suggest that Azam’s leadership lacked the same impact as Sharma’s.

In the wake of Pakistan’s performance, Afridi advocated for a broader structural change within Pakistan cricket. He acknowledged that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) would likely conduct a review, but emphasized the need for deeper solutions. “The real issue lies at the grassroots level of our cricket,” Afridi asserted.

“Our product is weak at the grassroots level, and if we invest there, good players will emerge.” By highlighting the shortcomings at the development stage, Afridi suggests that Pakistan’s struggles stem from a lack of strong young talent, and that long-term success hinges on investing in nurturing future generations of cricketers.

Change Needed Beyond Superficial Measures

While Afridi expressed his continued support for the team, he stressed the need for substantial change within Pakistan cricket. “A positive decision needs to be made, and the changes shouldn’t just be superficial,” he cautioned. Afridi’s statement implies that he believes the PCB’s response to Pakistan’s struggles should go beyond simply replacing a few players, and instead focus on addressing the underlying issues in player development.

Shahid Afridi’s comments have sparked debate about leadership and development within both the Indian and Pakistani cricket teams. While India celebrates its T20 World Cup victory under Rohit Sharma’s guidance, Pakistan grapples with the need for change and ponders the path forward under Babar Azam’s captaincy.
