WWE Hall of Famer Bret The Hitman Hart has never been shy to share a gripe or two. The former WWE World Champion always takes a verbal jab at Bill Goldberg, the man who ended Bret Hart’s career. For years, Bret Hart also held animosity toward Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels for the Montreal Screwjob. However, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels seemingly buried the hatchet on a January 2010 episode of Raw. Now, Bret Hart accuses Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon of having sex. Shawn Michaels, Vince McMahon, and Bret Hart’s History
In the 1990s, Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart rose to prominence in WWE. After years of muscled-up Superstars like Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior at the top of the card, a steroids scandal opened the door for smaller competitors to break through this glass ceiling.
Vince Chooses Shawn Over Bret
These new spots on the card caused Vince McMahon to pit Shawn and Bret against each other…on TV and backstage. Bret was the first to win the WWE Title. The Calgary, Albert, Canada native came from the Hart family wrestling lineage, which still lives on through Natalya. As a product of the original Dungeon, Bret Hart took wrestling seriously, sticking to a mat-grappling approach.
Meanwhile, the showiness of Shawn Michaels caught the eye of the fans. The former Rocker turned into The Heartbreak Kid, a brash-mouthed Superstar known for stripping on his way to the ring. Suffice to say, HBK was a sharp contrast to The Hitman,
It became clear that Vince preferred Shawn over Bret when HBK won his first World Title from Bret in overtime during a 60-Man Iron Man Match at WrestleMania 12.
Shawn Refuses to Put Over Bret
Bret expected Shawn to drop the belt back to him. This never happened. HBK was accused of faking an injury to get out of dropping the Title to Bret at WrestleMania 13.
Shawn would return months later and get into a real-life backstage brawl with Bret, which caused Vince McMahon to suspend both talents. Bret would form The Hart Foundation with his family, an anti-American Canadian group that de-tested the sophomoric actions of Shawn Michaels and Triple H, the faction known as D-Generation X.
During this time, Bret was the WWE World Champion and was signed to a 20-year deal with the company. WWE was losing to its competitor WCW, and Vince couldn’t afford to fulfill his agreement with Bret. Vince helped Bret negotiate a more lucrative deal with WCW, in hopes that Bret would drop the belt to Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997.
Montreal Screwjob and the End of Bret Hart’s Career
Survivor Series was set in Montreal, Canada. Bret refused to lose the Title to a man who wouldn’t lose it to him earlier that year. He also refused to do it in Canada. So, Vince and DX came up with a disqualification finish that all parties agreed with.
When Shawn Michaels put Bret Hart in his own Sharpshooter, Vince McMahon made referee Earl Hebner call for the bell. Shawn Michaels was awarded the Title, and Bret Hart was screwed in Montreal.
Bret would go to WCW, where Goldberg would end his career within two years. This ending left Bret very angry toward many parties. It’s been a long journey to healing, but Bret finally returned to WWE in 2010 to hug it out with Shawn Michaels and beat Vince McMahon at WrestleMania. However, old grudges never seem to die.
Bret Hart Accuses Shawn Michaels of Sleeping with Vince McMahon
There are a lot of rumors swirling as to why Shawn Michaels was given the ball in the 1990s. MMA fighter Chael Sonnen has openly stated that wrestlers had sexual relationships with Vince McMahon to make it in the business. He specifically called out the relationship between Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon.
Bret Hart seems to back that notion. The Hitman returned to Montreal for the anniversary of the Montreal Screwjob. During his tour, he spoke with the Johnny Pro Show.
Much to the shock of the audience, Bret didn’t hold back:
“I think there’s more going on here between these two guys, honestly. And, um… I’m not trying to be— I’m just being honest and blunt. But I don’t know. I suspected, and now I really have serious— I think that Shawn and Vince were sleeping with each other.
I honestly— I’m not… I’m just telling you. I think I’m very close to the truth here. Shawn and Vince were lovers, and I’m being dead honest.
I’m telling you. When I look back, I’m like, ‘I got caught between two lovers.’ I got shafted and screwed over, and Shawn was so envious and jealous of my position that he finally had to sleep with Vince to get it.”
Bret Hart Doubles Down on Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels’ Relationship
The Montreal audience roared in laughter over Bret Hart’s accusations. However, The Hitman didn’t blink. He didn’t show any signs that he was joking about the situation. In fact, Bret Hart would tell Shawn Michaels to his face that he thinks HBK slept with Vince.
Bret told the crowd:
“I would say it to Shawn if he were right here. I would actually like to have Shawn come clean and say, ‘Look, we were lovers.’ Cuz I’m sure they were.
100%. If I saw either Vince or Shawn here, I would say I think you guys were lovers.”
Lovers or friends, neither man seems to be running in the same circles anymore. Shawn Michaels was not noted as a guest at Vince McMahon’s 80th birthday party. However, HBK is still keeping busy running the future of WWE as Head Booker of NXT.
Vince McMahon has been accused of questionable sex acts with stars in the past. In fact, legal documents involving the Janel Grant sex trafficking case divulged that the former WWE Chairman had sex toys that he named after WWE Superstars.
