Save Coventry Speedway are once again calling on your support as they look to restore Speedway and Stock Car racing to the Brandon Stadium… Read the below from them to find out how you can help:

LAST year, an amazing 1,530 people submitted a response supporting a section of the draft Local Plan relating to the restoration and reopening of Coventry Stadium, Brandon for Speedway and Stock Car Racing.

We thank each and every person for their support. Last week (January 27), Rugby Borough Council (RBC) overwhelmingly approved the Local Plan, which now progresses to the next stage in the process.

This involves a further six-week consultation period prior to the Plan being submitted to the Secretary of State who will appoint an Independent Planning Inspector. The Inspector will consider all responses submitted during this six-week period before chairing a Public Examination and making his / her final decision on the plan.

Everyone who previously submitted a response will have received details of the new six-week consultation, and it is important to stress that this is a new stage of the process, moving from a draft Plan being approved locally to a revised version hopefully being approved by the Inspector.

We cannot stress enough this is another critical moment in the Campaign, and every expression of support is really important, whether you were one of the original 1,530 respondents or are able to offer support at this stage having not done so before.

The key section of the Local Plan is Policy W1B, which states:

“The council supports the restoration of Coventry Stadium, Brandon for speedway and stock car racing and other motor sports together with other community uses.
Planning permission will not be granted for development proposals which would conflict with these objectives.”

Last year, the Save Coventry Speedway and Stox Campaign Group (SCS) & Midlands International Raceway Limited (MIRL – the Consortium seeking to acquire and reopen the stadium) submitted a response in support of this policy. We will once again be submitting a response.

The Planning Inspectorate encourages those with similar views to act collectively wherever possible, as this helps limit the resource necessary to deal with a large response. To this end we propose to submit a combined response (from SCS and MIRL) setting out our wholehearted support for the Local Plan, in particular Policy W1B. We intend to prepare this for submission to the Council by around the end of February 2026.

We request therefore that you:

1. Send an email to info@savecoventryspeedway.com stating your support for Policy W1B and including your full name and postal address, with a brief explanation if you wish as to why this is important to you. This will enable us to add your name to a list we will attach to the response we submit. We need your postal address as the Inspector may challenge us to provide evidence that the list of names is genuine. We will not publish address details, but may distinguish between those who live locally compared to those from further afield. Please send this response to us by February 28 to enable us to have time to collate the details and add names and addresses to our combined response. We are assured that although this will all be sent on one document, the full numbers of responses will be taken into consideration.

OR

2. If you wish to submit a response direct, and have received an e-mail from RBC following your previous submission, follow the instructions on this document, and make sure you indicate your support for Policy W1B, include your name and postal address and a brief explanation as to why this is important to you. The deadline is 5pm on Friday March 13.
If you choose to do it this way, it would be helpful if you forward a copy to us (info@savecoventryspeedway.com) so we can ensure there is no double counting.

In deciding what you might do please bear in mind that messages posted on social media alone will not be placed before the Local Plan Inspector. In other words, please comment on social media, but also take action as suggested in either 1 or 2 above!

We cannot stress enough this is another critical moment in the Campaign, and every expression of support, and every single response from both the local community and the speedway and stock car racing communities really is important.

We are on the cusp of achieving our shared objective and we MUST NOT take our foot off the pedal.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with us and we will try our best to help.
