India’s star batter Shubman Gill has said that he regained his confidence in Test cricket because of the England series he played in January 2024. Of note is that the young batter was going through a hard time in the red-ball format despite a positive start to his career during the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21.
Gill scored 259 runs in his first ever Australian series before returning with 838 runs from another 34 innings at an average of 26.18 with only two hundreds and two fifties. At the end of the first Test match, which India lost by 28 runs, Gill made scores of 23 and 0 in Hyderabad against England while he later got out for 34 during the second Test match extending his bad spell without half century to twelve consecutive innings.
Nevertheless, he made an impressive comeback when he scored an excellent century (104) during the second innings of Visakhapatnam Test match. Reflecting on this particular test match series, the 25-year-old stated that such victory brought back a lot of confidence especially since we were behind at some point when India had to come back after going down by 0-1.
Moreover, I mean it was such a big confidence boost for me like after losing the first Test match. To win the series there was pressure on us because we were missing many players,” Gill said to Jio Cinema.
In addition, he stated that playing in a five-match Test series was a really great opportunity while the squad maintained their intensity rate even after an extended pause following two Tests.
Firstly, this was my first time playing five Test matches, thus an incredible experience feeling that kind of pressure. And even after having breaks between two test matches we kept our force,” Gill said.

Despite a poor start, Gill finally found his feet in Tests, registering scores of 91, 52* and 110 in the next three Tests. Continuing such a performance would be his intention as he gears up for an exhilarating two-match series against Bangladesh.
