Why Shubman Gill is chosen over Jasprit Bumrah
Shubman Gill has been announced as the new test captain for the WTC 2025-27, with the bid to enter the WTC final. This move comes after Indian failed to qualify for the WTC final in the 2023-25 final. Jasprit Bumrah who had captained the first BGT test in absence of Rohit Sharma, was the only Test India had won in the BGT series 2024-25.
However, BCCI has chosen Shubman Gill as the captain to balance the pressure on players. Had BCCI appointed Bumrah as the test captain, he would have immense pressure not only as a captain as the lead pacer of the team as well, and with Bumrah’s fitness concerns. Which is why the BCCI found Shubman Gill as the right candidate to lead the team in the upcoming England tour.
Jasprit Bumrah Availability for England Tour
India announced its squad for the five-match Test series against England starting June 20, naming Shubman Gill as captain and Rishabh Pant as vice-captain. Jasprit Bumrah, once considered for leadership, will not play all five Tests due to fitness concerns.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed Bumrah may participate in only three to four matches, based on medical advice. Bumrah’s injury issues led to Pant’s appointment as vice-captain. Agarkar emphasized managing player workload is crucial, and Bumrah understands his current fitness limits. India hopes to avoid setbacks like Bumrah’s back injury during the Australia series last year.
