Sinner into last four of ATP Finals

Jannik Sinner is through to the semi-finals of the ATP Finals with a match to spare after beating Alexander Zverev.

The Wimbledon champion, on home soil in Turin, triumphed 6-4, 6-3 for a fifth straight win over the German world No 3 Zverev.

Sinner ended the match with 28 winners to 14 unforced errors, having dropped just eight points on his first serve.

“I felt like I was serving very well in the important moments. I tried to play the best tennis possible when it mattered,” he said.

“Sascha played great tennis and I am very pleased with how I handled it.”

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime kept his hopes of a place in the semis alive with a comeback win over Ben Shelton.

The 25-year-old, beaten by Sinner in his first round-robin match, came to within two points of another defeat in a second-set tie-break but rallied to beat big-serving American Shelton 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5.

Shelton is eliminated while Zverev will face Auger-Aliassime for a place in the semis.

On the match, Auger-Aliassime said: “He [Shelton] was playing much better than me at the start. It was a weird start, but as the match went on I was finding ways to put returns in the court.”

In the doubles, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski made the semi-finals as they bid to become the first all-British pair to win the title. They saw off Britain’s Henry Patten and his Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 10-7 to make it two victories from two matches. Patten, and the British top seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool need to win one more match to advance. Guardian sport
