After beating Denis Shapovalov in straight sets at BNP Paribas Open, Jannik Sinner was asked by the tennis media if there was anything he really dislikes about being a professional tennis player?
“Dislike… Yeah, press conference. Answering always the same questions.”
Moments after Sinner essentially told reporters straight to their faces he dislikes them and their monotonous, repetitive questions every tournament, the world no. 1 immediately tried to soften his confrontational words.
“It’s not dislike, it’s just part of the job. I like to get out and play and then leave. But for me I think we have a beautiful life. We see so many great places… I think we have a very nice life, very safe life, having great people around… doing this media, I’m not the kind of guy who likes to show. I like playing tennis and spend time with the people I love and sharing nice moments with the team.”
Once again a major figure in tennis has revealed that the tennis media is always asking the same questions to players week after week. Maria Sharapova once said at a press conference she didn’t even have to think about answering a redundant question, her mind just answered it on auto pilot.
Hopefully the tennis establishment will try to work with the media to solve this ongoing problem which makes the media and also the players appear boring which of course they are not.
My Biofile interviews with players never are boring. Richard Williams said the Biofile was the best interview he ever did. Chris Evert said “I love these questions.”
