Sophie Devine Signs Two-Year Extension with Perth Scorchers in WBBL

Sophie Devine, the dynamic allrounder from New Zealand, has committed to extending her contract with the Perth Scorchers for another two years in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). This decision ensures that the Scorchers will continue to benefit from Devine’s exceptional skills both with the bat and ball as she continues to be a key figure in their lineup.

Devine’s tenure with the Scorchers has been nothing short of outstanding. Last season, she was retained by the Scorchers in the first-ever overseas player draft, a decision that paid off handsomely. Devine amassed 489 runs and claimed 14 wickets, performances that earned her a place in the WBBL Team of the Tournament. Her consistent all-round contributions have made her one of the most valuable players in the league and a cornerstone of the Scorchers’ success.

With her contract extension, Devine is set to play at least two more seasons with the Scorchers, a move she described as a “no-brainer.” Reflecting on her decision, Devine expressed her excitement and satisfaction with continuing her journey with the team. “I’m absolutely stoked to be returning to the Scorchers,” she said. “I have built such a special connection with the players and staff over the past four seasons, and I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.”

Devine’s leadership has also been instrumental for the Scorchers. She captained the side to their first WBBL title during the 2021-22 season, a victory that holds a special place in her heart. “Winning the WBBL|07 title in front of our fans at Optus Stadium will always be a special memory for me, and something the whole group is incredibly motivated to achieve again,” Devine added.

In addition to Devine’s extension, the Scorchers have made strategic moves to strengthen their squad. The signing of Mikayla Hinkley from Brisbane Heat is a notable addition, bringing in a talented player who adds depth to the lineup. Moreover, the Scorchers have secured the services of Alana King for three more seasons, ensuring that their spin department remains strong.

As one of the leading allrounders in world cricket, Devine is on the brink of achieving a significant milestone in the WBBL. She is just two wickets away from completing 100 wickets in the competition, a testament to her longevity and impact in the league.

The Scorchers’ squad is shaping up well for the upcoming season, with a blend of experience and young talent. Players like Chloe Ainsworth, Stella Campbell, and Piepa Cleary, along with the seasoned campaigners such as Devine and King, make the Scorchers a formidable team.

Perth Scorchers squad (so far): Chloe Ainsworth, Stella Campbell, Piepa Cleary, Maddy Darke, Sophie Devine (INT), Mikayla Hinkley, Alana King, Lilly Mills, Chloe Piparo.

With Devine’s leadership and all-round prowess, the Perth Scorchers will be aiming to replicate their past success and continue their strong presence in the WBBL. Her extension is a significant boost for the team, as they look to build on their achievements and strive for more titles in the coming seasons.
