Young Athletes Road Races Results

There were spells on Sunday at the Lindsays Young Athletes Road Races when it felt the event had been subject of a late venue switch: from Greenock to Greenland.

Arctic weather blasts every so often featured strong winds and driving rain as Battery Park and those in attendance were, er, battered.

So let’s start right away with a heartfelt well done and thank you for racing to every young competitor across our U17, U15 and U13 races.

Thank you to all our parents, coaches, team managers and volunteers for turning out and making the event happen with our gratitude extended to host club Inverclyde AC and the Road Running and Cross Country Commission.

From memory, the weather blasts were particularly severe for the U13 Girls and U15 Girls during their laps of the park.

The other four races didn’t exactly escape even though we did have occasional sunshine, too, in the best traditions of springtime in Scotland.

*Well done, also, to all those involved in U11 Development races which preceded the championship event.

Aberdeen athlete Millie Glass-Park defied the conditions to win gold in that opening U13 Girls race to win by a large margin. Silver went to Abbie Boyle of Law and District with third-place claimed by Isobel Patterson of Harmeny AC.

Cambuslang Harrier Carlo Brown took the U15 boys gold with a strong run as Alfie White of Dunfermline Track and Field claimed the silver. There was third place there for Giffnock’s Christopher Cameron.

The top four finishes at U15 and U17 level were assured of London Mini Marathon selection for Scotland to give those races added meaning.

East Kilbride AC’s Nina Clark took the victory in the U15 Girls race as silver went to Eve Cameron of Giffnock and bronze to Emi Daunt of Edinburgh. Fourth athlete home was Giffnock’s Emma Nicholson.

The U15 Boys race was a good battle for much of the race before Luca Anderson of Anster Haddies pulled away of second placed Adam Kinghorn of Falkirk. Bronze was won by Harry Robinson of Dundee with that important fourth place landed by Rory Beattie of Harmeny.

Millie Gairn of Airdrie was our U17 Women’s champion by four seconds from Harmeny AC’s Nancy Corrie. Giffnock athlete Holly Simpson landed bronze as Lucy Taylor of Law and District AAC placed fourth.

The U17 Men were together for the first two or three laps but by the time they headed along the finish straight, Alastair Street had a bit lead and the Kilbarchan AAC athlete duly triumphed by 14 seconds.

Calum Dick of Giffnock seized second close to the line with Connor Campbell of Garscube in third. Fourth place here was Louie Muir of Giffnock to clinch that coveted Mini Marathon place.

In the team races, it was an excellent day for Giffnock North AC with four sets of golds. Aberdeen AAC won the U13 Girls and Falkirk took the U13 Boys golds.
