Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has named former England cricketer Ian Bell as the batting coach for their upcoming three-match Test series against England. The 42-year-old, who had a distinguished international career with England, was appointed to leverage his extensive experience of playing in English conditions.
Bell, a former right-handed batter, enjoyed a prolific career for England, participating in 118 Test matches. His wealth of knowledge and familiarity with English pitches are expected to provide valuable insights to the Sri Lankan team as they prepare for the challenging tour.
Sri Lanka Cricket’s chief executive, Ashley de Silva, highlighted the strategic reasoning behind Bell’s appointment. “We appointed Ian to bring in a person with local knowledge to help the players with key insights on the conditions there,” said de Silva. “We believe his inputs will help our team in this crucial tour.”
Bell’s appointment comes at a time of transition for Sri Lanka’s coaching staff. Last month, SLC appointed former captain Sanath Jayasuriya as the interim head coach, following the resignation of Chris Silverwood, who stepped down citing personal reasons after Sri Lanka’s early exit from the T20 World Cup. Jayasuriya, who led Sri Lanka with distinction during his playing days, will hold the interim position until a full-time head coach is selected.
Jayasuriya, a legendary figure in Sri Lankan cricket, played 586 international matches across all formats, scoring 42 centuries and taking 440 wickets. His vast experience is expected to complement Bell’s expertise as they work together to guide the team during the England series.
Chris Silverwood, who took over as Sri Lanka’s head coach in April 2022, enjoyed initial success with the team, leading them to victory in the T20 Asia Cup later that year. However, the team struggled to replicate that form in subsequent major tournaments, failing to advance beyond the group stages in both the T20 World Cup 2022 and the 2023 50-over World Cup. Silverwood’s resignation marks the end of a mixed tenure, and the team now looks to rebuild under the new leadership.
Sri Lanka’s tour of England will be a significant test for the team, and the addition of Ian Bell is seen as a critical move to strengthen their chances. Bell’s experience in English conditions is expected to be a key asset, particularly for Sri Lanka’s batters, who will face the challenge of adapting to the swing and seam-friendly pitches of England.
As Sri Lanka gears up for the series, the combination of Jayasuriya’s leadership and Bell’s technical expertise is anticipated to provide the team with a strong foundation as they seek to make a mark on English soil.
