Sri Lanka Lose Nuwan Thushara to Injury, Dushmantha Chameera Still Out for India T20Is

Sri Lanka’s preparations for the upcoming T20I series against India have been hampered by a double injury blow to their pace attack. Just a day after Dushmantha Chameera was ruled out due to illness, young fast bowler Nuwan Thushara has been sidelined with a broken finger.

Thushara’s Broken Finger a Major Setback

Team manager Mahinda Halangoda confirmed that Thushara sustained the injury during a fielding practice session under lights on Wednesday. Though the broken finger is on his non-bowling hand, the severity of the injury necessitates his absence from the T20I series.

This is a significant setback for Sri Lanka, as Thushara had established himself as a vital cog in their T20I setup throughout 2024. He impressed at the T20 World Cup, claiming eight wickets in Sri Lanka’s three matches. Earlier this year, he etched his name in Sri Lankan cricket history by taking a five-wicket haul for just 20 runs against Bangladesh, including a hat-trick.

Replacement Options and Remaining Questions

The search for Thushara’s replacement is underway. Left-arm quick Dilshan Madushanka appears to be the frontrunner, but an official announcement is awaited.

Chameera’s absence was confirmed on Wednesday, with Asitha Fernando named as his replacement. Sri Lanka’s pace attack depth will be tested in the upcoming series, especially considering the absence of these two in-form bowlers.

Sri Lanka Look to Restructure Bowling Attack for First T20I

The first T20I between Sri Lanka and India is scheduled for this Saturday. The remaining Sri Lankan pacers, along with the potential inclusion of Madushanka, will have their work cut out against a formidable Indian batting lineup.

Team management will need to act swiftly to find the right combination to fill the void left by Thushara and Chameera. The upcoming series will be a crucial test for Sri Lanka’s bowling depth and their ability to adapt to setbacks.
