Star pistol shooter Manu Bhaker met with Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday, following her triumphant performance at the Paris Olympics, where she secured two medals. The meeting, which lasted only a short while, has garnered significant attention, especially as a photograph of the two has surfaced online.
A Warm Welcome Back to India
Manu Bhaker arrived in Delhi on Wednesday morning to a grand reception, greeted by hundreds of supporters and family members at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Accompanied by her coach, Jaspal Rana, Bhaker showcased her medals to the enthusiastic crowd, expressing her joy at being back home.
Reflecting on her experience, Bhaker said, “It feels great the way I was welcomed at the airport and the hotel. I am very happy that the people of the country are supporting me like this. I have brought home two medals and a lot of inspiration and motivation to work harder in the future.” She also shared her excitement about indulging in Indian cuisine again, stating, “I could not eat Indian food for a long time but after coming here to Delhi, I had aloo paratha.”
Historic Achievements at the Paris Olympics
At the Paris Olympics, Bhaker made history by becoming the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal, clinching bronze in the women’s individual 10m Air Pistol event. She later partnered with Sarabjot Singh to secure another bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, marking India’s first-ever shooting team medal at the Olympics. Although Bhaker narrowly missed out on a third medal in the women’s 25m pistol event, finishing fourth, her achievements have solidified her status as a leading figure in Indian shooting sports.
The meeting with Sonia Gandhi highlights Bhaker’s rising profile not just in sports but also in the political arena. Following her Olympic success, various political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers, have publicly congratulated her, emphasizing the pride she has brought to the nation. Bhaker expressed her gratitude, stating, “Winning this medal is a dream come true, not just for me but for everyone who has supported me.”
As she continues to bask in the glory of her achievements, Bhaker’s interaction with prominent political figures reflects the growing recognition of athletes in India and their potential to inspire future generations.
