Statement on tragedy in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia

On Tuesday, a mass shooting was reported in Tumbler Ridge, in northeast British Columbia. The shootings occurred in two locations, a secondary school and a home.

A total of nine people were killed across the two locations with six killed at the school, and a seventh passing en route to hospital.

Two people were found dead at the home.

The suspected shooter was found dead at the school from a self-inflected wound.

The NHL released the following statement Wednesday regarding the tragedy in the community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia:

We are overwhelmed by the heartbreaking violence and loss of life in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The NHL family is sending our prayers and compassion to the families and friends of those who lost their lives, those who are injured and to the entire community as they mourn this unimaginable tragedy.

Canada had not been wracked by such a shooting in decades.

Reports from Tumbler Ridge cite as many as 27 people wounded in the shootings,

  • Nine people were killed and at least 25 more were injured after a mass shooting in the community of Tumbler Ridge, B.C., on Tuesday.
  • Six victims were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and another died on the way to the hospital. Two more people were found dead in a home, which police believed to be connected to the school shooting.
  • The only suspect was found dead inside the school from “a self-inflicted injury.”
  • A Grade 12 student at the school said he and his classmates were locked down for more than two hours behind barricaded doors: “It felt like I was somewhere that I had only seen across a TV.”
  • Officers believe they have identified the shooter, but said they will “struggle” to ever determine a motive for what has become one of the deadliest school shootings in Canadian history.
  • Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement of support for families and officials, and has postponed a planned trip to the Munich Security Conference.
  • All flags on federal government buildings across the country will be flown at half mast.
  • Provincial and world leaders, including King Charles, have expressed solidarity with Canadians and the B.C. community.
