The Pittsburgh Steelers opened their 2025 season with a dramatic 34–32 road win over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. It was a game filled with big plays, unexpected swings, and a mix of strong execution and fortunate breaks.
From standout performances to concerning trends, several key moments defined Sunday’s victory.
Rodgers delivers in statement debut
All eyes were on Aaron Rodgers, and the veteran quarterback delivered.
Facing his former team, Rodgers looked poised and in complete control, throwing four touchdown passes while completing 73.3 percent of his throws. He spread the ball to seven different receivers, including scores to Calvin Austin III, Jaylen Warren, Jonnu Smith, and Ben Skowronek.
His 136.7 passer rating marked the highest by a Steelers quarterback in seven seasons.
More importantly, Rodgers remained calm in critical moments, leading a composed game winning drive without showing any signs of panic.
Run defense raises early concerns
Despite the win, the Steelers’ run defense struggled significantly.
The Jets leaned heavily on Breece Hall and Justin Fields, executing a clear plan to control the ground game. Pittsburgh allowed 182 rushing yards on 39 attempts, including 107 from Hall and two rushing touchdowns from Fields.
The issues extended beyond the interior, as the Steelers struggled to set the edge and contain Fields in space. While second half adjustments helped, the early damage nearly proved costly.
Offensive line shows inconsistency
The Steelers offensive line also had its share of issues.
Rodgers was sacked four times, with pressure frequently coming from the edges. Broderick Jones was involved in multiple breakdowns, highlighting inconsistency in pass protection.
The run game failed to generate momentum as well, with Pittsburgh managing just 53 rushing yards and averaging 2.6 yards per carry. Jaylen Warren led the team with 37 yards on 11 attempts.
With a relatively new unit still building chemistry, adjustments in protection schemes or personnel may be needed moving forward.
Special teams provide the spark
In a tightly contested game, special teams played a pivotal role.
Kenneth Gainwell forced a fumble on a Jets return that was recovered by Ben Skowronek, setting up a Steelers touchdown and shifting momentum.
Chris Boswell added to the impact with a 56 yard field goal early and a career long 60 yard kick that ultimately served as the game winner.
Ramsey seals the win
With under a minute remaining, the Jets had one final opportunity to steal the game.
On fourth down, Justin Fields appeared to have a path to the marker but instead flipped a short pass to Garrett Wilson. Jalen Ramsey stepped in with a perfectly timed hit, forcing an incompletion and turnover on downs.
The Steelers took over and sealed the win in victory formation.
A win with lessons to build on
The Steelers showed resilience and playmaking ability, but the performance also highlighted areas that need improvement.
Rodgers proved he could still perform at a high level and deliver in clutch moments. However, issues in run defense and offensive line play nearly overshadowed the effort.
In the end, Pittsburgh combined execution, timely plays, and a bit of good fortune to secure the victory. Moving forward, tightening those weaknesses will be key to sustaining success.
