The legendary Indian cricket team batter Sunil Gavaskar remained speechless after witnessing Nitish Reddy’s reverse scoop on Day 1 of the pink-ball Test against Australia. In the 42nd over of the Indian innings, Scott Bowland bowled a length delivery in red, outside the off-stump and this was the moment when Nitish decided to try his luck with an unorthodox approach against the ball. He assumed the stance very quickly and scooped the ball over the slip fielders for a six. It was one of the longest parts of the ground and even brought a smile on the face of Jasprit Bumrah on the non-striker end. It was on the Star Sports channel, where “little master Gavaskar” ooed and aahed about the boy adding, he adopted the right approach typical of “fearlessness of youth” even in Test cricket.
The response of Gavaskar was: “Well, I think it was a very good innings. He showed good appreciation of the need of the situation and attacked at the right time when the fielders were inside the circle.”
“Even when the fielders were out at the fence that over from Scott Boland, the way he was looking to play the pull shot, the reverse sweep was outstanding. He was looking to play off the right balls, and it shows that he has got the right temperament,” Gavaskar said.
The former India captain was equally impressed at the young all-rounder bringing, it seems, a novelty in terms of approach and he added that he has a lot of fearlessness in the new Indian soldier who looks set to be a good future investment in Indian cricket.
He is a kid, just 22-the age at which he has shown the fearlessness of youth. The super confidence just bursts off him. Every time you see him on the field, you feel that here is a player who is a good prospect for Indian cricket.
“Look at that reverse scoop, that’s one amazing shot for a six. It was the longest boundary,” he said.
