Sunil Gavaskar shares an interesting tale about Sir Viv Richards

Indubitably, the legendary Indian batter and former captain Sunil Gavaskar recalled an incident from his playing days when he was sledged by former West Indies batting great Viv Richards. Gavaskar recently appeared on Australia’s talk show, the Australian Football League-based The Front Bar, of which one segment was purely dedicated to legends of the game. Once in this special edition, he was asked by other co-hosts if ever he was verbally molested by the great West Indies. The answer was a united ‘once’ that left the entire panel in split view.

He went on, recalling the earlier incident. “As Viv ran from slip to slip, as he went past me, he said to me, ‘No matter, no matter, no matter what number you bat, man, the score is still zero.’”

Gavaskar had batted for India at No. 4 instead of his usual No. 1 position in that match.

“I dropped down to bat at number 4, and Malcolm Marshall got Anshuman Gaekwad out on the fourth ball of the first ball. Fifth ball, he got Dilip Vengsarkar out for a duck, and so I came in to face the hat-trick ball, and I played it, and then that was the end of the over,” Gavaskar explained.
