Swindon and Wiltshire Police issue update after 18-year-old attacked 71-year-old Walsall fan

Swindon Town and Wiltshire Police issue an update after an 18-year-old attacked a 71-year-old Walsall fan at Monday’s game.

The incident happened just after 5pm following the Robins’ 2-1 victory, the victim needed hospital treatment but has since been discharged.

The 18-year-old was arrested and has been bailed pending further enquiries, with Swindon since issuing a strong statement condemning the incident.

Swindon Town wrote: “Swindon Town Football Club is dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for all supporters attending matches at the Nigel Eady County Ground.

“Everyone should feel welcome and able to enjoy the game without concern.

“We have a strict stance against any form of anti-social or unsafe behaviour, which will not be accepted under any circumstances.

“Following an incident during yesterday’s fixture against Walsall, the Club is working closely with the relevant authorities, including Wiltshire Police, to carry out a full investigation.

“Swindon Town remains committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct and will continue to act decisively to safeguard our supporters and the integrity of the game.”

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “An 18-year-old man has been arrested following an assault in the Swindon Town County Ground yesterday afternoon (06/04).

“A 71-year-old Walsall supporter required hospital treatment following the incident that happened just after 5pm. He has since been discharged.

“The suspect has been bailed pending further enquiries.”

On the game, Swindon’s Ian Holloway said on Fletcher Holman: “His volley was horrendous. He panicked. Most of the time that will kill a young fella. He will then be useless after that.

“So to have that character to be able to do that to get the equaliser, and then also have that brilliant mind to square it after Drinan had hammered him the other day for not squaring it. So did I.

“A club the size of us, we need to sort ourselves out and get promoted. I am embarrassed we’re in the second division, and if that puts extra pressure on me, I don’t care.

“So I’m putting pressure on these lot. I want them on that wall (of honours) for the rest of history. That’s all that matters to me. And if I don’t get it this year, I have failed. That’s a fact.

“It’s the first time we’ve had to win a game and we actually won it. So that’s massive. And we came back from being behind and we weren’t playing that well, but we managed to do it.”

Walsall manager Darren Byfield said: “Two individual mistakes have cost us. It’s a cruel game, football, and we have to make sure we’re fully concentrated from the start right to the end.

“I am gutted because today I was really proud of them. But we have to realise we have to see these games through.

“I have to pick them up. That’s my job.”

Here’s the social media reaction as Swindon and Wiltshire Police issue an update after an 18-year-old attacked a 71-year-old Walsall fan…

@WestieJack_WFC: Such is the sad state of football, an old guy was badly beaten up going back to the Swift coach after leaving the Swindon game today. If anyone has any info or video, can you please pass it to #WalsallFC so it can be passed to the police. Trevor, I hope you are OK. Swindon scum. If @BenSadler and @WFCOfficial can pass on every Walsall fans best wishes to the our older fan who was badly attacked after Swindon game. We hope his injuries aren’t to severe, although they did look serious. If #WalsallFC could give an update on his condition, if possible.

@harr91171: stewards in the away end need a good talking to letting there fans throw coins vapes etc into the home end for 10-20 minutes without anything happening is a joke

@stfcjosh: Said it yesterday football is becoming crazy! People going to a game just looking for fights which has now ended in an elderly walsall fan suffering. Disgraceful and hopefully punished correctly instead be a slap on the wrist. Hope walsall fan is recovering 🙏

@P4ULX00GZEL: I dont feel welcome, everytime i step in to block t2 of the town end, 500 stewards rush towards me, makes me feel unsafe. sort it out.

@JamieD_STFC: Life ban required

@jxsper7781: im sure the young children sat in a6 upper/lower felt safe as they were hit with coins, bottles and vapes from the walsall fans from when we equalised until after we scored the winner, not justifying any actions after the game but the stewarding was once again appauling

@RichardSTFC94: What is it about Walsall and Swindon, always something, whether it was us/them or both parties, the minority ruin it for the rest 🙄

@Foolishhydra_TT: Firstly ban the one responsible but it all boils down to the stewarding. It’s awful and has been for ages. A destroyed ground taken over by a failed gestapo. Maybe take a look at them before blaming the fans for everything that happens because most problems start with them

@JonaOnDrums: That’s absolutely awful, & hope he’s ok. Please don’t tarnish every swindon fan though! That fan is scum. Simple. Unfortunately, every Club has them.

@jettight19: wtf I’m so sorry to hear this really hope he’s ok @Official_STFC whoever did this make sure they can’t be near the club those people don’t represent Swindon

@stfcjosh: Really disappointed to be reading this, why people go football just to find a fight is disgusting let alone picking on an elderly man wanting to enjoy a game of football! Hope he’s all okay now.

@SwindonSparkle: I hope the gentleman is now ok. Every fan should be able to attend a match & be able to go home without being involved in any incidents. I hope them at the so called ‘Swindon fan’ is dealt with by the law.

Neil Adams: I have known Trevor Little most of my life since I first started going to see the #Saddlers at Fellows Park when I was a nipper. One of the nicest, most gentle and peaceful people you could ever meet. Just follows his team home and away. Thank you to all the decent Swindon fans who have sent good wishes messages on various sites. I can assure you nothing will stop Trevor following his beloved Saddlers once he has recovered. Glad the scumbag has been arrested and I hope the courts and the football authorities throw the book at him 🙏 UTS
