India’s strength in handling spin bowling became a significant weakness as their batters struggled against the relentless pressure from Sri Lanka’s spinners during the recently concluded three-match ODI series. India’s batters performed poorly in the deciding match (third ODI) at the R Premadasa Stadium, which allowed the hosts to win the series 2-0.
India’s ability to play spin bowling turned into a major weakness, leading to their defeat in the three-match ODI series. Their batters couldn’t cope with the Sri Lankan spinners and couldn’t mount a strong challenge.
The Indian team, known as the Men in Blue, lost 27 wickets to the Sri Lankan spinners—the most wickets lost by any team against spinners in a bilateral ODI series with at least three matches.
Left-handed bowler Dunith Wellalage, who uses his left arm in a traditional style, took five wickets for 27 runs in the third one-day international match, which greatly weakened India’s batting lineup. Wellalage also became the first spin bowler to take two sets of five wickets in one-day internationals against India. His first set of five wickets happened during the Asia Cup in 2023.
After being named the Player of the Series for scoring 108 runs and taking seven wickets, Wellalage thanked his captain Charith Asalanka and the whole team management. “First, I want to thank my captain and my teammates, the coaching staff, everyone gave me great support. The pitch is turning, so we adjusted to the pitch. The pitch today was the same, we made fewer mistakes today. Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis batted really well, and Jeffrey Vandersay, myself, and Maheesh Theekshana did really well with the ball,” said Wellalage during the post-match presentation.
Captain Rohit Sharma talked about India’s challenges with spin bowling, saying it’s not a big worry but something each player should get ready for in the future. “I don’t see it as a big problem, but it’s important for us to focus on our personal strategies, and it’s something that really tested us in this series,” Rohit explained.
