Cricketer Suryakumar Yadav has sustained an injury to his hand while fielding in the Buchi Babu Invitational, a few days prior to the beginning of Duleep Trophy 2024. He is participating in red-ball cricket with aspirations that will help him make a return to Test cricket.
The seriousness of his injury is still unknown but it appeared serious enough for him not to bat in Mumbai’s second innings when Tamil Nadu XI defeated them by 286 runs to qualify for the final on Friday.
It has been said that Suryakumar sustained the injury while playing in the field. Notably, he batted in Mumbai’s first innings, gathering 30 runs off 38 balls by hitting three fours and one six; however, his team was bowled out for a paltry 156 runs in response to TN XI’s total of 379 all out.
Last year, Suryakumar made his Test debut against Australia and is looking forward to playing in this format once again after a break of 19 months. Recently, he mentioned that red-ball cricket has always been his main focus.
“There has always been a craving for red-ball cricket. Although I initiated my journey into international cricket with shorter formats, this particular format gives me much pleasure,” he said. In his opinion, there is no doubt about prioritising red-ball cricket above all other variations and therefore I am here before the Duleep Trophy,” were his words earlier this month when talking to journalists.
Additionally, Suryakumar will play in the Duleep Trophy that marks the beginning of India’s domestic season. He is a member of Team C which will be captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Aged 33, he possesses vast experience of first class cricket as he has made 5628 runs in 82 matches at an average of 43.62.
Numerous Indian cricketers are going to play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy so that they can either regain their red-ball touch or show their suitability for test matches ahead of the domicile series against Bangladesh that will begin mid-September this year.
In the next several months, India will be competing in 10 test games including two against Bangladesh, three versus New Zealand, and five on the tour of Australia.
