Terry Koshan calls Treliving era “unsuccessful” in Toronto: Leafs Morning Take

Well, that was an eventful Monday for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After 1,034 days on the job, Brad Treliving was fired as general manager, marking the end of his nearly three year run at the helm. Obviously, that’s where the conversation started on the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take as David Pagnotta filled in for Jay Rosehill.

Oh yeah, there was a game on the ice, too, and it was a highly anticipated one at that. Again, the timing on the Treliving move was weird. Everyone’s zoned in on the Gudas REVENGE game, and that’s when you do it? Ok. At any rate, kudos to the Maple Leafs, who indisputably got their pound of flesh on the hulking blue liner. Three seconds in, Max Domi went toe-to-toe with Gudas—LMT judge Jay Rosehill gave the decision to Domi. That said, it was a strange fight. Gudas didn’t throw a single punch, almost as if he was just there to take his medicine. Rosie did mention on X that he heard Gudas is dealing with a hand injury, which could explain it. Regardless, Domi and the Leafs did a solid job addressing the Ducks captain for his actions back on March 12th. And in true Leafs fashion, Toronto stormed back from a 3–1 third-period deficit to win 5–4 in OT, with John Tavares’ second of the night being the difference. These types of efforts have been few and far between this season, but the Leafs played with real passion and intensity. It was nice to see.

After that, Toronto Sun reporter Terry Koshan stopped by to dish on all the chaos. Koshan offered a measured take on Toronto’s response to Radko Gudas, calling it a bit over the top despite applauding the team’s effort—especially Max Domi stepping up immediately. That performance led to a bigger question: why hasn’t that level of urgency been there all season? He also credited Easton Cowan and others for rising to the occasion. The conversation shifted to Auston Matthews and how both he and the team move forward following a tough, high-profile moment where the response wasn’t immediate. Koshan also weighed in on the surprising dismissal of Brad Treliving, focusing on the odd timing and what it signals about the organization’s direction. He outlined what Toronto could be looking for in its next GM, with names like Doug Armstrong continuing to circulate.

You won’t want to miss the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take as Jay Rosehill returns to the mix. He will weigh in on Toronto’s response to Gudas and the Treliving news, too.
