Somewhere in the Maple Leafs’ war room yesterday at the trade deadline, Elliotte Friedman said someone’s apparently listening to trade offers for Matthew Knies. And if that’s real, they’re being way too short-sighted. Knies is only 23, he’s already shown he can score, and he’s got the makings of a guy who’ll be a cornerstone here for a long, long time.
Knies Scored 29 Goals Last Season with Matthews
Last season, Knies had a breakout with 29 goals while skating next to Auston Matthews. That’s not a fluke. Even with Mitch Marner gone, Knies has taken on more responsibility in the top six and is still producing. This season, he’s got 16 goals and 51 points in 60 games. That’s not yet world-beating, but it’s a solid stat line for a 23-year-old winger on a team that’s having a huge down season. Any NHL team would snap him up in a heartbeat.
So why would Toronto even consider moving him? The only reason, according to Friedman, is if some team offers a blockbuster deal too good to refuse—maybe help the Maple Leafs fill out the blue line or add a top-six forward. But let’s pause for a second: Knies is giving you top-six skill and is firmly part of the core. Why give that away for uncertainty?
There Are Too Many Reasons to Keep Knies to Count
Here’s the first reason to keep Knies: continuity matters. He’s locked into the top-six, knows Matthews’ game like the back of his hand, and has chemistry that doesn’t come overnight. Trading him for a shiny “maybe it works” package is a gamble.
Reason two: Knies is still improving. He’s only 23. He’s not done growing, not done figuring out his NHL game. This is exactly the age where a player transitions from “good prospect” to “key contributor.” Moving him now risks interrupting that development curve.
And reason three: he’s a core piece of Toronto’s future. Matthews, William Nylander, John Tavares—these are untouchables, and Knies is right behind them. You don’t build for the long term by selling off your young top-six forwards. That’s how you end up chasing pieces instead of building a foundation.
Knies Could Become a Maple Leafs Legacy Player
Maple Leafs fans should take a breath. Knies belongs here. He’s part of the next era, a player who’s going to help define the team for years. When it’s all said and done, he could be one of the most memorable Maple Leafs players of all time. Certainly close to the top 10 without a doubt.
Listening to offers might be understandable—but acting on one would be pure madness.
