MLSE CEO Keith Pelley made it clear that the next general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs would have to be data-centric, during his media availabilities on Tuesday. Pelley repeatedly spoke about the need to correctly understand data, and being able to interpret it to understand where the sport is heading into the future. Considering that Pelley is also trying to draw lessons from the Florida Panthers, along with the upstart Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens, there should be a clear front-runner for the job: Panthers assistant general manager Sunny Mehta.
I wrote the following about Mehta, as one of the 26 people who would shape the 2025-26 NHL season:
Mehta was a legendary poker player before joining the Panthers’ front office, and his superior of understanding of math and the salary cap positions the two-time champions to be contend for the next half-decade. He’s rarely discussed as a future general manager, but the NHL is a copycat league and the next great team executive is sitting in plain sight in the Panthers’ box.
Mehta’s popular reputation has grown tenfold, as the league tries to mirror the Panthers’ formula for success. Brad Treliving believed the Panthers won in large part because of their physicality, while seemingly overlooking their disciplined 1-2-2, where all four lines and defence pairs are in lockstep. Considering that Mehta wrote a best-selling book about poker in 2007, before joining the world of professional sports, his unconventional background will certainly appeal to Pelley, who made subtle allusions to Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes throughout Tuesday’s pressers.
The 47-year-old is firmly in the prime of his career, and the Maple Leafs’ general manager role would cast a new level of scrutiny. Mehta was the first full-time analytics director in the NHL, during his tenure with the New Jersey Devils. It was often thought that Kyle Dubas was the forefather of hockey analytics in the executive suite, but that distinction may truly belong to Mehta.
Pelley wants to win above all, and Mehta has been remarkably successful in every avenue of his career. In some respects, you could almost liken him to Ernie Adams, the shadowy director of football intelligence for the New England Patriots, who operated as Bill Belichick’s man in the sky throughout the dynasty years. It will be an exhaustive search, and Mehta is the perfect balance between Traditional Hockey Executive, and an unconventional, progressive thinker who could help the Maple Leafs eventually reach their goal of winning the Stanley Cup.
