The Curran brothers’ legacy continue: Ben Curran set to represent Zimbabwe in international cricket

The Curran brothers—Tom, Sam, and Ben—have each taken unique paths in their cricketing careers, with Tom and Sam excelling as England internationals, while Ben seeks to make his mark with Zimbabwe. The sons of Zimbabwean cricket legend Kevin Curran, the brothers spent their early childhood in Rusape, Zimbabwe, before relocating to England following their father’s untimely death in 2012.

While Tom and Sam have become regular fixtures in England’s national team, Ben’s career took a different route. After representing Northamptonshire, Ben is now focused on returning to his Zimbabwean roots. His impressive performances in Zimbabwe’s domestic Logan Cup, where he scored 458 runs, have significantly bolstered his chances for national selection.

Ben’s goal is to represent Zimbabwe, following in the footsteps of his father, who played for both Zimbabwe and Northamptonshire. The prospect of playing for Zimbabwe is particularly special for Ben, who expressed excitement over the possibility of facing the other two Curran brothers in an international match, especially with Zimbabwe set to tour England for a Test next year. He acknowledged that such a moment would bring “mixed emotions.”

“It’s full circle, right? He played at Northampton, I did, and now I’m hopefully going to go back and also represent Zimbabwe, where he (his father) played and also coached, so it would be great if that happened,”

While talking to Cricbuzz, he further added,

“I think my accent would give it a way a little bit. I have lived in both England and Zimbabwe, but I guess my connection to Zimbabwe is pretty strong, with the fact I grew up and spent most of my childhood there, and with my parents being from there. We went [to Zimbabwe] when we were real young, I think I was probably four, five, after my dad had finished playing for Northampton. We moved, I guess you could technically say back to Zimbabwe, and I spent most of my childhood there, went to school there; more than half my life,”

Ben Curran aims to carry on The Curran Brothers’ legacy

Currently preparing with the Mid-West Rhinos, Ben is working hard to deliver consistent performances in the upcoming season to secure a place in Zimbabwe’s national squad. His journey mirrors that of his father, and he hopes to carry on the Curran brothers’ legacy by competing at the highest level for Zimbabwe. He further stated,

“There’s always a chance, I’ve just got to go back and perform consistently, and that gives me the best opportunity. At the end of the day, it’s results-based. It’s one of those where I’ve got to do all I can and control what I can control, and hopefully, that puts me in the best position going forward.
