England

Highest total – 481/6 vs Australia in 20118

Lowest total – 86/10 vs Australia in 2001

In 2018, England dazzled the cricketing world with a total of 481 against Australia. Till date, the score remains an all-time high score in the 50-over format and has also allowed England to register its biggest ever win in terms of runs – they won the game by 242 runs. The architects of the score were Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales who scored 82, 139 and 147 runs respectively.

Just like the highest score, England posted their lowest total against Australia at Manchester in 2001. Batting first, the Aussies were restricted to 208 by the English bowlers and in reply, the trio of Gillespie, Warne and McGrath junked England’s bowling as there were only a few players who could reach the double-figure score.

India

Highest total – 418/5 vs West Indies in 2011

Lowest total – 54/10 vs Sri Lanka in 2000

With Virender Sehwag’s record double century, India registered their highest total in ODI – 418 for five in 50 overs – against West Indies in 2011. Sehwag’s amazing knock of 218, which comprised of 25 fours and 7 sixes, also broke Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s record of highest individual score of 200*. The match was won by India as the Indies team was bundled out for 265 in the final over.

Sri Lanka registered a total of 299 runs with the help of 189-run knock by Sanath Jayasuriya. And in reply, the entire Indian team was dismissed for just 54 runs with the duo of Ganguly and Tendulkar posting just single-digit scores.

New Zealand

Highest total – 402/2 vs Ireland in 2008

Lowest total – 64/10 vs Pakistan in 1986

New Zealand’s highest total of 402/2 came in a match against Ireland during the Associates Tri-Series in 2008. James Marshall’s 161 off 141 balls and Brendon McCullum’s 166 off 135 balls devastated Ireland’s bowling line-up and New Zealand won the match by 290 runs.

New Zealand’s lowest ever score of 402/2 was recorded against Pakistan during the second semi-final of the Austral-Asia Cup in 1986. Pakistan’s bowling lineup at that time consisted of a lethal trio of Abdul Qadir, Wasim Akram and Imran Khan who shared eight wickets between themselves. Here, only Evan Gray of New Zealand was able to contribute a double-digit score with his bat.

Australia

Highest total – 434/4 vs South Africa in 2006

Lowest total – 70/10 vs New Zealand in 1986, 70/10 vs England in 1977

This match which is often referred to as ‘The 438 ODI’ has a prominent place in the ODI history as it was the first time when a total of more than 400 was posted by any team. Batting first, Australia’s Adam Gilchrist and Simon Katich smashed 55 and 79 runs respectively. But it was Ricky Pointing’s splendid knock of 164 runs off 105 balls which took Australia’s score beyond the 400-run mark. But despite such a splendid inning, Australia lost the game, all thanks to the spellbinding willow work by Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith.

Coming to their lowest in the ODIs, the Aussies registered their first lowest score of 70 at Birmingham in 1977. In a game against England, the Australians were chasing a score of 171 which came on the back of Gary Cosier’s and Greg Chappell five-wicket haul. But the Aussies were unable to face England’s formidable bowlers and only three of their batsmen managed double-digit scores. Nine years after this, Australia again registered a total of 70 against New Zealand at Adelaide.

South Africa

Highest total – 439/2 vs West Indies in 2015

Lowest total – 69/10 vs Australia in 1993

South Africa registered its highest total of 439/2 against West Indies at the Wanderers Stadium in 2015. Skipper AB de Villiers scored staggering 149 runs in just 44 balls, while Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw contributed 153 and 128 runs respectively. De Villiers also registered the record of the fastest ODI hundred in this match as well. This game was also a one-sided affair as South Africa won the match by 148 runs.

When it comes to South Africa’s lowest ODI score, then it was during the Benson and Hedges World Series in 1993. While chasing a nominal target of 173 set by the Aussies, South Africa tumbled down on a score of mere 69 runs. Only Kepler Wessels and Hansie Cronje of South Africa managed to post double-digit scores.

Pakistan

Highest total – 399/1 vs Zimbabwe in 2018

Lowest total – 43/10 vs West Indies in 1993

Pakistan was able to register its highest score of 399/1 all because of Fakhar Zaman 210* runs, which contained 24 fours and 5 sixes. This included a spellbinding opening partnership of 304 runs with Imam-ul-Haq, who contributed 113 runs with his bat. The ODI against Zimbabwe was a completely one-sided affair as Pakistan won the match by 244 runs.

Pakistan’s lowest total of 43 came against West Indies during the Total International Series in 1993. The West Indian bowling lineup which consisted of Courtney Walsh, Anderson Cummins and Patrick Patterson completely destroyed Pakistan’s batting side as they shared 9 wickets between themselves. Zahid Fasal was the only Pakistani batsman who was able to register a double-digit score.

Bangladesh

Highest total – 338/8 vs Australia in 2019

Lowest total – 58/10 vs West Indies in 2011, 58/10 vs India in 2014

Bangladesh’s highest total of 333 came when they were chasing a total of 381 by Australia in the 26th ODI of the 2019 World Cup. Although Bangladesh was nowhere in terms of the chase, the game had several individual instances of brilliance. Mushfiqur Rahim scored an amazing 102 off 97 balls while Mahmudullah contributed 69 runs with his willow. Tamim Iqbal also managed 62 runs off 74 balls.

The first instance of Bangladesh’s lowest total of 58 in the 2011 World Cup. The entire Bangladesh team was bundled out by West Indies’ trio Kemar Roach, Sulieman Benn and Daren Sammy who accounted for 3, 4 and 3 wickets respectively. Another time when Bangladesh registered a low total of 58 was in 2014 where Stuart Binny’s 6 wickets were the defining moment of the match.

Sri Lanka

Highest total – 443/9 vs the Netherlands in 2006

Lowest total – 43/10 vs South Africa in 2012

Sri Lanka’s highest total of 443/9 came during the Sri Lanka tour of Netherlands in 2006. Batting first, Sri Lanka’s opening batsman Upul Tharanga fell cheaply, as he managed just 18 runs off 21 balls. But his opening partner Sanath Jayasuriya played a splendid knock of 157 runs, which comprised 24 fours and 1 six. Lanka’s bowling line up which comprised the lethal trio of Dilhara Fernando, Farveez Maharoof and Malinga Bandara limited the Netherlands to a score of 248, winning the match by 195 runs.

Despite having a batting line which comprised the likes of K Sangakkara, T Dilshan and D Chandimal, the Sri Lankans were bundled down to 43 runs during the Sri Lanka tour of South Africa in 2012. South Africa’s amazing bowling line up helped them in winning the match by a margin of 258 runs.

West Indies

Highest total – 389/9 vs England in 2019

Lowest total – 54/10 cs South Africa in 2004

West Indies registered its highest score of 389 when they were chasing a mammoth total of 418 runs by England. It was Chris Gayle’s amazing knock of 162 off 97 balls which enabled them in losing the match by a small margin. England’s Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler were completely devastating and accounted for 103 and 150 runs respectively.

While chasing a target of 264 set by South Africa, the West Indies tumbled down on a score of 58 runs. South Africa’s formidable bowlers completely destroyed the West Indian batting side and Makhaya Ntini and Lance Klusener were the pioneers as they took three wickets each. This allowed the Africans to win the match by a mammoth 209 run margin.

Afghanistan

Highest total – 338/10 vs Ireland in 2017

Lowest total – 58/10 vs Zimbabwe in 2016

Although 338 may not seem like a huge total by any means but for Afghanistan, it’s the highest score in ODIs so far. Before the start of the ODI series in March 2017, Afghanistan had elegantly defeated Ireland in the T20Is. Following the momentum, they had also gained a lead by winning the 1st match of the 5 match ODI series.

In the 2nd ODI, Afghanistan elected to bat first and did give a good start by posting 90 runs on the scoreboard for the first wicket. Mohammad Shahzad scored 63 runs off 43 balls while Rahmat Shah managed 68 runs off 70 balls. But it was skipper Asghar Afghan’s 101 which led the team to a match-winning score. In the end, Ireland managed only 304 runs from 47.3 balls and Afghanistan won by 34 runs.

Speaking about their lowest score in the ODIs, the match was itself a low scoring affair wherein Zimbabwe had managed 175 runs, which included 83 and 58 by Hamilton Masakdza and Graeme Cremer respectively. It seemed liked Afghanistan would effortlessly chase the target, but some splendid spells by Neville Madziva and Luke Jongwe made their register their lowest score. Zimbabwe bowled out Afghanistan for 58 to win a remarkable 3rd ODI by 117 runs.

Ireland

Highest total – 331/8 vs Zimbabwe in 2015, 331/6 vs Scotland in 2018

Lowest total – 77/10 vs Sri Lanka in 2007

It was the 30th ODI of the 2015 Cricket World Cup when Ireland made its highest score of 331 against Zimbabwe. Batting first, Ireland’s opening duo Chamu Chibhabha and Sikandar Raza didn’t have much impact and contributed only 30 runs to the totals. But it was skipper Brendan Taylor’s amazing spell of 121 runs off 91 balls and Sean Williams’s splendid knock of 96 off 83 balls that Ireland registered their highest total and also won the game by 5 runs.

Yet another time Ireland managed to pile up a total of 331 was against Scotland in the UAE Tri-Nation series in 2018. This time, almost everyone from the top seven scored runs and led their side to victory wherein Ireland won by 24 runs.

Speaking of the lowest score, Ireland registered its lowest total of 77 against Sri Lanka in the 2007 ICC World Cup. Their batting order was completely destroyed by Farveez Maharoof and Muttiah Muralitharan as both of them accounted for 4 scalps each.

Zimbabwe

Highest total – 351/7 vs Kenya in 2009

Lowest total – 35/10 vs Sri Lanka in 2004

Back during the 2009 Zimbabwe tour of Kenya, the Zimbabweans posted a total score of 351-7, which remains their highest ODI total till date. Their total was well laid out, as every batsman from the top seven contributed with their bat. Kenya’s batting side tumbled down for 200 runs which made Zimbabwe win the match by 151 runs.

Zimbabwe’s score of 35/10 against Sri Lanka is still the lowest in ODI cricket history. Their batting side was completely devastated by the trio of Farveez Maharoof, Dilhara Fernando and Chaminda Das, who shared nine wickets between them.
