Rohit Sharma, the Indian opener is currently not having the best of times in Test cricket. While the captaincy has brought some unwelcome records, Rohit’s batting hasn’t been any better. In a three-match Test series against New Zealand which India lost 3-0, the right-handed batter scored a total of 91 runs in six innings. Rohit scored 18 runs in the very friendly second test match pitches, as the spinners dominated, however Rohit was still out twice, in three attempts by the pacers. After the Indian Test captain’s dismal display, former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has some words of advice for him.
Kaneria advised India head coach Gautam Gambhir to alter the position of Rohit inside the batting order. He argued that the Rohit should not bat as an opening batsman but shall play at the number 3 position. He further explained that Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill should be the opening batsmen for India.
Gambhir’s statements were also on Rohit being asked to open the innings, “Just see if Rohit Sharma is still comfortable opening or if he should come in one-down and change his order a little bit because he has been struggling with the track in India. In the recent series, Southee got him out twice, and the ball will move more over there in Australia, so you have to see how you go with that,” he said and added giving an outlook to Kaneria’s strategy.
“the ideal Indian batting order ought to be with Jaiswal and Shubman as opening batsmen, Rohit coming in one down, followed by Virat two down. They have to manage that. Long Indian batting line up has to be managed by gambhir because ashwin and jadeja are there, so a deep batting line up is present,” Kaneria concluded.
Lastly, for Rohit, this is also the lowest point in his career in Test captaincy, if we may say so. Under his leadership, India was whitewashed 3-0 by New Zealand for the first time at home.
