In the early hours of the second day’s play in Chennai, Akash Deep posted his highest Test score of 17 runs off 30 balls against Bangladesh during their inaugural match. With four fours, it brought joy to Indian players besides him as he revealed some stylish strokes.
Nevertheless, right before he was dismissed, Akash experienced pain caused by an errant throw aimed at him by Bangladeshi bowler Hasan Mahmud who hit him on his back asking medicine trainers to help him because he needed medical attention.
This wordy-text is worth sparsely paraphrasing: “Akash received help from physiotherapist during the stoppage of play” while saying that “Hasan was later seen talking to the Indian young pacer possibly apologizing for committing into him unintentionally.”
In a tragic moment for Akash, the Indian dressing room displayed some laughter that was apparently initiated by something Virat Kohli said to head coach Gautam Gambhir. The comment left Gambhir in stitches as captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill joined in on the joke.
Incidentally, on Day 1 India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had an angry exchange with Litton Das claiming that the fielders aimed their throws at him.
Meanwhile, India was bowled out for 376 runs in their first innings on Day 2 at Chepauk. Hasan took five wickets; this made him the first Bangladeshi bowler to take a Test five-for in India.
India’s top scorer was Ashwin, who made a remarkable 113 runs off 133 balls, hitting 11 boundaries and two sixes in the process. He restored India’s innings by adding 199 runs for the seventh wicket with Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 86 in 124 balls.
With India reduced to 34/3 after Bangladesh chose to bowl first, it was Hasan who caught them off guard in the first session on Day 1 with a three-wicket burst leaving them reeling.
However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant put in some effort as they repaired a damaged fourth wicket stand that eventually amounted to 62 runs taking their score from 96/3 before falling down to 144/6. Then Ashwin along with Jadeja made a counter-attack that put India back in control.
