The legend of Adolis Garcia closes, at least as a Texas Ranger

The legend of Adolis Garcia grew to its peak on Oct. 27, 2023. His walk-off 11th inning home run in Game 1 of the World Series somehow one-upped his ALCS performances in Houston. A moment Rangers fans will never forget and a call from FOX’s Joe Davis you should never forget either.

Because what Davis said in the moment is exactly right. Adolis Garcia is a legend when talking about the most recent run in Texas Rangers history. Sure, there are more talented players with higher profiles on the roster – Corey Seager, Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom, and formerly Marcus Semien. Even Wyatt Langford, who made the Opening Day roster months removed from being drafted No. 4 overall. And still, Garcia turned into and remained the fan favorite due to his electricity (just look at the YouTube thumbnail up there from MLB), clutch moments, and likable personality.

Consider how the Rangers even ended up with Garcia. The St. Louis Cardinals sent him over for cash considerations just before Christmas in 2019. Garcia only had 17 MLB at-bats under his belt with a batting average of .118 and an OPS of .294. Two total hits, one of which was a double, and an RBI over 21 games as a Cardinal. Not exactly promising.

What kind of production would you expect from that kind of deal? Is it 141 home runs, 458 RBIs, two All-Star appearances, a top-15 AL MVP finish, and elite defense in right field with a Gold Glove to his name? Not even close. Getting ANYTHING out of Garcia in a singular season for a struggling franchise would have been a win, let alone five years of plus stuff.

Then, the cherry on top of the already pretty nice sundae – what Garcia did during the 2023 postseason run, which brings him into legendary status. His OPS sat at 1.108 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs. Twenty hits in 68 plate appearances. The Game 1 moment.

Most of his damage came against the Houston Astros, with Davis saying Garcia “owns Houston” after the heroic Game 6 and Game 7 performances. Garcia delivered when the Rangers needed him the most and earned himself a World Series ring.

All that being said, Chris Young was correct to move on.

Seeing these kinds of figures leave your organization is tough. Because there is more to Garcia in Texas than just his numbers. Fans loved him despite poor 2024 and 2025 offensive seasons, still chanting “El Bom-bi” during his at-bats. The constant question of “What if Adolis gets hot?” remained in plenty of heads throughout the struggles. If the spark plug gets rolling, maybe others in the lineup would too.

We even saw glimpses of the clutch factor coming back. Garcia hit a walk-off home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers early last year, a game Davis was also commentating for FOX. In late June, with the team looking to get back to .500, Garcia hit a game-tying three-run home run against the Baltimore Orioles. He knew the ball was gone off the bat, instantly going into celebration mode. The Rangers media team had some fun with the whole scene, throwing it into just about any hype video you could imagine.

But unfortunately, when looking at the big picture, two years of data were enough to make the decision. Change in right field was needed. A more consistent bat should man the 9-position for the Rangers, bringing in Brandon Nimmo. Sure, there might be a defensive drop-off but Nimmo figures to provide a jolt of offense the lineup needs. Garcia was just not good enough, finishing with an OBP under .300 in back-to-back years and even slugging under .400 for the first time in his career in 2025.

Opening Day will be a weird sight. Yes, Rangers fans will watch Garcia play, just in a different uniform. The end of his time in Texas becomes officially, officially official. Garcia will suit up for the Philadelphia Phillies, stepping into a similar role as Nimmo. Philadelphia felt like a fresh face was needed in right field, putting Garcia out there instead of Nick Castellanos.

So, the legend of Adolis Garcia comes to a close, at least as a Texas Ranger. Folks in Philadelphia are hoping the same magic is carried over with him. And once Sunday’s game ends, you can bet plenty of people in Texas will continue to root for El Bombi.
