The Luka Doncic reason why LA Lakers need to fire Rob Pelinka

There’s a need for improvement for the Los Angeles Lakers this season.

For what it’s worth, the Los Angeles Lakers were off to a great start during the 2025-26 NBA season. However, the organization is currently in a slump.

After all, the Lakers are currently on a three-game losing streak and are just 4-6 in their last 10 games of the season.

Now, the ball is in Lakers GM Rob Pelinka’s court to erase some huge flaws in the team’s roster. What if he fails? NBA analyst Jason Timpf feels it’s time to sack Pelinka.

Pelinka took charge of the Lakers late during the 2018-19 NBA season. Sure, the Lakers won the 2020 NBA Championship during his tenure, but that’s it.

Aside from that, time after time, Pelinka has displayed his poor sense of leadership, which has kept the Lakers a mediocre team. Keeping that in mind, Timpf is convinced the Lakers need to get rid of Pelinka soon.

“In the modern NBA, you need athleticism and shooting to succeed. This roster is somehow utterly devoid of both. I think the Lakers need to fire Rob before the [trade] deadline,” Timpf said.

He added: “Because if they continue to let him run this team, he has never once, in the years that he’s been in control of this franchise, demonstrated any semblance of a basketball identity or any semblance of an understanding of what works in the modern NBA.”

Although the Lakers signed Pelinka to an extension this past summer, Timpf remains adamant to fire him before they face a major consequence of trusting him.

Jason Timpf predicts Luka Doncic will demand a trade if the LA Lakers keep Rob Pelinka

Last season, Luka Doncic was controversially traded to the Lakers by the Dallas Mavericks. Of course, Doncic took time before committing to the Purple and Gold.

After all, Luka signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Lakers in the summer. But even then, Timpf believes that unless the Lakers fire Pelinka, Doncic will demand a trade.

“I think they got to get rid of him before it’s too late. If they let him keep captaining the ship, I think they’re gonna end up getting a Luka trade request, in a couple of years,” Timpf stated.

So far, Doncic remains committed to improving the Lakers. But let’s not forget he’s averaging 33.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game.

As a result, the Slovenian superstar is picking up injuries more often. So, it seems only a matter of time before Doncic gets frustrated with the lack of depth on the bench around him.
