Indian cricketer Sanju Samson has experienced many ups and downs in his international career, which has lasted almost ten years. Since he started playing for India in 2014, Samson has played in 46 matches in different limited-overs formats. Even though he has strong statistics in domestic cricket, the 29-year-old has not secured a consistent place in the Indian national team. He has been selected for various series but hasn’t fully taken advantage of those chances.
The biggest moment in his career happened earlier this year when Samson played in the T20 World Cup and won the championship. The captain of the Rajasthan Royals, Samson, confirmed this during a recent interview.
“The past 3-4 months have been the most successful of my career. Being on the World Cup team feels like a dream that I wished for 3-4 years ago. I wanted to play in my final One Day International World Cup. But it wasn’t until I joined the team and won the Twenty20 World Cup that I understood it wasn’t simple,” Sanju Samson shared with Zee.
Samson didn’t have a chance to play in the ICC event because Rishabh Pant was chosen as the main wicketkeeper. Samson was selected for the three-game T20 series against Sri Lanka, which was also India’s first series with head coach Gautam Gambhir.
The Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, won all three matches, sweeping the series 3-0. Samson played in the last two T20 matches but didn’t score any runs in either game. “I didn’t play as well as I hoped in the recent series against Sri Lanka,” he admitted.
Even though Sanju Samson isn’t a regular player on the Indian team, he has a large and loyal group of fans all over the country. These fans have always stood by him when he was left out of the team before.
Talking about this, Samson mentioned, “The support I’ve gotten from people all over the country, and even from Malayalis living in places like New Zealand and the West Indies, is fantastic. My teammates often notice that I have a lot of support wherever I play. That’s why they feel sad when I’m not selected for the team or when I get out without scoring any runs.”
Sanju Samson has played 16 One Day Internationals for India and scored a total of 510 runs, including one hundred and three half-centuries. In 30 Twenty20 matches, he has scored 444 runs with an average of 19.30.
