Creating memories since 1987
How It All Began
Many years ago, two friends—Steve and Rich—were attending a medical convention at Sunriver Resort in Oregon. During the trip, they hit the links and stumbled upon a spirited group of 36 guys playing in what looked like a tournament.
As golf buddies tend to do, they struck up a conversation—and discovered this was an annual guys’ trip, a crew of friends reuniting each year for golf, laughs, and memories.
Although they were only casual golfers, they were inspired and decided “We could do this!”
And so, SWIG was born—short for: Serious Week of Imbibing and Golf
The Early Years
The first year (1987), 12 brave souls signed up for the week long event. The venues have changed each year since, including Central Oregon, Bandon Dunes, Southern Oregon, Western Washington, British Columbia (Whistler) — and the camaraderie and competition never wavered. As many as 24 have shown up over the years.
In the early days, it was 36 holes a day, dinners, scotch and poker late into the night. They would sleep for a few hours and then get up and do it again.
Now? It’s 18 holes, a quick bite, and bedtime by 9:00 p.m. And nobody’s complaining!
Meet the Characters
Over the years, SWIG has developed a cast of unforgettable personalities—and equally unforgettable nicknames:
- The Commish (Steve)
- Steinie (Rich)
- PT 109 (Carl) – Out of respect, the origins of this nickname won’t be disclosed, but you might be able to guess.
- Vlade, Hanzie, Pork Chop, LIW (Lost in Woods),The Turbanator (a Sikh), Heaver (ex-Olympian Javelin thrower and holder of US record for javelin at one time), Sir Edmond, Caucasian Asian, Puppy Dog, Hogie, Oh Paddy, Magoo, Cutter Dog, Administrator, Maestro (a legit concert pianist), Rain Man, Private, Sarge, Big Dog, Little Dog, Big Sandy, Middle Sandy, Little Sandy.
Each name has a backstory. Some can be told. Others? Not so much.
The Competition
Each day of SWIG features a unique golf competition designed by The Commish and managed by PT 109. GG4Golf even contributed a game or two. [Click HERE for group game ideas]
And just for fun, every KP during the week gets a sleeve of balls.
The week culminates in a two-day team match play event called the “SWIG Cup”. Two Captains are chosen based on performance to select two teams. At the conclusion, the losing team has one job: Pay for a giant steak dinner on the final night!
Who Gets In?
A few founding members still swing away every year. As others come and go, over 50 guys have had the honor of attending over the years. When new blood is needed, the old guard reaches out to someone they determine fits the vibe.
I was lucky enough to get the call a few years ago… and somehow, I still make the list.
The SWIG Code
There’s an unwritten rulebook—follow it, or find yourself mysteriously off next year’s invite list:
- No cheating
- No whining
- No slow play
- Help cook and clean
- Don’t be that guy
The Gear
Each year, SWIG participants receive custom golf wear featuring a one-of-a-kind logo created by The Commish. Here are a few of all-time favorite designs:

To Many More Years
SWIG isn’t just a golf trip. It’s a tradition. A reunion. A brotherhood. A week where members ditch the grind and reconnect—through competition, storytelling, and maybe a cocktail or two.
Here’s to keeping the SWIG spirit alive for many more years.
Cheers!
