After scoring the highest runs for India in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa on June 29 in Barbados, Virat Kohli returned to play after a one-month break during the three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka earlier this month. However, in the three games played at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the star batsman struggled to perform well, leading to India’s surprising losses in the second and third ODI by 32 and 110 runs, respectively.
Kohli, who is the third highest run scorer in ODIs, managed to score only 24 runs in the first match on August 2 and then scored 14 and 20 runs in the next two matches, which India lost by 32 runs and 110 runs, respectively, on August 4 and 7.
People had big hopes for Kohli in the one-day games against Sri Lanka, but he didn’t play well and got out in the same way in all three games.
Kohli’s bad batting made some fans upset, especially because India didn’t bat well in the three 50-over games. But his old friend from RCB, Dinesh Karthik, is standing up for him, saying it was hard to bat in Sri Lanka.
On a Cricbuzz show, Karthik was asked about Kohli’s batting and how he kept getting out, and Karthik said there’s no need to worry.
“Let’s acknowledge that it’s been challenging to handle spin bowling in this series. Whether it’s Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, or any other player, it’s been difficult. Especially with the ball that’s slightly used between overs 8 to 30, it’s been a lot of hard work. There’s no need to be concerned though; not many pitches are like this. It’s just been a tough pitch for playing against spinners. I’m not here to defend Virat Kohli, but I can say that dealing with spin has been really hard,” Karthik mentioned.
Kohli had an opportunity to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record and become the quickest player to reach 14,000 runs in One Day Internationals during this series. However, he failed to meet that goal and will now have to wait until January 2025 to hit the 14,000-run milestone in the 50-over format of the game.
