Deandra Dottin has been selected for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE after she shocked everyone by announcing her retirement two years ago. Dottin, who has the fastest century in women’s T20 internationals, left suddenly in 2022 due to a “non-conducive” environment in West Indies cricket. Nonetheless, she changed her mind last month hoping to have a say in this month’s World Cup
Dottin’ s recent form has been amazing as she finished thrice among the top three run-getters in the women’s Caribbean premier league (WCPL) league phase of 2024. In four innings, she made a total of 113 runs with an average of 28.25 and a strike rate of 111.88. It is worth mentioning that this season Dottin was the only batter to hit more than two sixes. One of her best performance was when she scored 53 runs off 38 balls against the Guyana Amazon Warriors which caused a thrilling super over at Brian Lara cricket academy. In the superover, Dottin made an unbeaten 13 off four balls to lead Trinbago Knight Riders’ amazing victory.
Dottin was welcomed back into West Indies set up by head coach Shane Deitz, describing her as having a “phenomenal record” which she is currently showing once again at the WCPL. “We have really been working hard on our off-field team culture, and leadership group within the side,” said Deitz. “Denadra and some other new entrants into possibilities like this – they are all going to be received with open arms too.”
“On the field her record is incredible,” I said, “and that gives us flexibility with power-hitting and smart batting.” “She is an unbelievable fielder, bowls death overs and mixes it up occasionally but boy does she come into her own when bowling the big hittings.” “Such a winner!” “She was at the camp last week fitting in so well.” “It’s great to have her back in the team and we are looking forward to what she can do when we face other teams during the World Cup’
As for the other T20I series held against Sri Lanka back in June which they won by two to one, there will be four changes this time around led by Hayley Matthews. In addition to Dottin, there’s also Ashmini Munisar, Mandy Mangru and uncapped player Nerissa Crafton have been included run-time players who played during that tour against Sri Lanka but have not been part of any squad preparing for World Cup such as Cherry Ann-Fraser, Rashada Williams or Shabika Gajnabi among others – all these were dropped out from World Cup selected team from series against Sri Lanka. On October 4 at Dubai they will play first match against South Africa thus starting two years old victorious title holding West Indies’ campaign which was initiated last year when she contributed significantly on her way making famous commemorative mark in cricket history after being crowned winners there before facing Bangladesh , England ,and Scotland respectively on 4 October 2023.”
